Marcantonio Maffei (also Marco Antonio Maffei ; born November 29, 1521 in Bergamo , † August 22, 1583 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman, Archbishop of Chieti and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Born the third of eight children of Girolamo Maffei and his wife Antonia Mattei, he was the brother of Cardinal Bernardino Maffei , uncle of Cardinals Orazio Maffei and Marcello Lante and great-uncle of Cardinal Gregorio Naro . He studied at the University of Ferrara , which he graduated in September 1547 with a doctorate to Doctor iuris utriusque . He was incardinated in the clergy of the Diocese of Rome and in 1549 became consistorial advocate, later canon of the Lateran Basilica . In 1552 he was Lieutenant Governor of Viterbo .

On July 14, 1553 he was appointed Archbishop of Chieti and succeeded his brother Bernardino in this office. around 1554 he was a trainee lawyer at the tribunals of the Apostolic Signature and from September 27, 1555 to 1557 he was governor of Viterbo. From 1560 to January 1566 he was vice gentleman of Rome, then until 1570 Datar of His Holiness . Pope Pius V appointed him nuncio in Poland. Before January 14, 1568 he renounced the Archdiocese of Chieti and became canon of the Vatican Basilica on July 29 of the same year with the death of his brother Achille . In October 1569 he became the papal house prelate .

In the consistory of May 17, 1570, Pius V elevated him to cardinal priest and awarded him the cardinal's hat and the titular church of San Callisto on June 9 of the same year . As a cardinal Marcantonio Maffei took part in the conclave of 1572 , in which Pope Gregory XIII. was chosen. Marcantonio Maffei was Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops under Gregory XIII from 1576 until his death . he was also Prefect of the Apostolic Breven.

He was buried in the Roman church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva .
