Orazio Maffei
Orazio Maffei (* 1580 in Rome ; † January 11, 1609 ibid) was an Italian archbishop and cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
Born the second of five children of Mario Maffei and his wife Plautilla Fabi, he was a nephew of Cardinals Bernardino Maffei and Marcantonio Maffei and a cousin of Cardinal Marcello Lante . Orazio Maffei studied at the University of Perugia , where he obtained a doctorate. Under the pontificate of Paul V he became a cleric of the Apostolic Chamber , from January 11, 1603 to 1604, he was also governor of Civitavecchia .
In the consistory of September 11, 1606, Pope Paul V. created Orazio Maffei as cardinal deacon . He received the red hat on September 14th, 1606 and the title deaconry of San Giorgio in Velabro on October 9th of the same year. On February 7, 1607 he opted for the cardinal class of cardinal priests and received Santi Marcellino e Pietro as the titular church .
With a dispensation , because he had not yet reached canonical age , Orazio Maffei was elected Archbishop of Chieti on September 3, 1607 . He was ordained bishop on Sunday, September 16, 1607 in the church of San Silvestro al Quirinale by Cardinal Marcello Lante ; Co- consecrators were Metello Bichi , Bishop of Sovana , and Girolamo di Porzia , Bishop of Adria . On September 17th, 1607, Orazio Maffei received the pallium .
He died on January 11, 1609 in Rome and was buried in the tomb of his ancestors in the local church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva .
