The canton of Bischwiller is a French constituency in the arrondissement of Haguenau-Wissembourg in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).
history
The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the départements as part of what was then the "Strasbourg District".
With the establishment of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, the canton was redesigned as part of what was then the arrondissement of Strasbourg.
From 1871 to 1919 there was no further subdivision of the Hagenau district at that time .
Since June 28, 1919, the canton has been part of the newly founded Arrondissement Haguenau.
On March 22, 2015, the municipality of Kaltenhouse , which until then belonged to the canton of Haguenau, was reclassified to the canton of Bischwiller.
geography
Until 2014, the canton bordered in the north on the cantons Soultz-sous-Forêts and Seltz in the arrondissement Wissembourg , in the east on Germany with the district Rastatt in the administrative district Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg , in the south on the canton Brumath in the arrondissement Strasbourg-Campagne and in West to the canton of Haguenau .

Until the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons in March 2015, the canton of Bischwiller included the 21 municipalities of Auenheim , Bischwiller , Dalhunden , Drusenheim , Forstfeld , Fort-Louis , Herrlisheim , Leutenheim , Kauffenheim , Neuhaeusel , Oberhoffen-sur-Moder , Offendorf , Rœschwoog , Rohrwiller , Roppenheim , Rountzenheim , Schirrhein , Schirrhoffen , Sessenheim , Soufflenheim and Stattmatten . Its layout corresponded to an area of 180.13 km 2 . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 6703.
