The green neon ( Hemigrammus hyanuary ), also known as the Costello tetras , is a schooling fish from the family of the true tetras (Characidae). Despite its misleading name, it does not belong to the neon fish of the genus Paracheirodon , but to the genus Hemigrammus . The green neon lives in the middle and upper Amazon from Iquitos to São Paulo de Olivenca and in Lake Hyanuary near Manaus .
The green neon is a peaceful and undemanding schooling fish which, due to its frugality, is unreservedly suitable for keeping in the aquarium , including in community tanks.
features
Its shape is slightly higher than that of the real neon. Its upper side is yellowish to olive-green in color, from the upper edge of the gill cover to the base of the tail a greenish to yellowish iridescent longitudinal band extends. Its ventral side is silvery. The green neon is four centimeters long.
Fin formula : dorsal 11, anal 14-16
Reproduction
Green neons spawn at dusk. In courtship, the male swims under the female and follows its movements in order to nestle closely to its partner at the side when the eggs are laid. The fry hatch after 24 hours and only swim free after six days.
