The red neon ( Paracheirodon axelrodi , syn .: Cheirodon axelrodi , Hyphessobrycon cardinalis ), also called Cardinal Tra, is a freshwater ornamental fish from the order of the tetra . He comes from South America .
features
Red neons are 2.5 cm SL to 5.1 cm SL long, with animals raised in aquariums becoming larger and having higher growth rates. Dorsally (on the back) the red neon is iridescent blue-green , ventrally (towards the belly) is bright red. There is no shoulder mark.
The sexes of the neons can hardly be distinguished, usually the females are somewhat stronger than the males.
distribution
Its natural range extends from Venezuela and Brazil to Colombia. It occurs in the Orinoco and Rio Negro and their tributaries. It was introduced in Suriname .
Way of life
An analysis of the stomach and intestinal contents of fish caught in their natural habitat shows that red neons are essentially predators. They feed on mesofauna that cling to submerged aquatic plants, roots and other decaying material. Tiny crustaceans (microcrustaceans) and mosquito larvae (Diptera) were the most common prey, while algae were taken relatively rarely.
In clear water biotopes, the red neon prefers to stay in shaded areas.
Aquaristics
Most of the animals traded are wild-caught from the tributaries of the Rio Negro and Orinoco . According to a 2001 study, the red neon was the most traded ornamental fish in the Amazon state . Annually 12 to 15 million fish were exported, about 80% of the ornamental fish trade from the Amazon.
Propagation in the aquarium is possible, but difficult. The fry hatch after 24 to 30 hours and swim freely after 3 to 4 days in an aquarium. The peaceful animals should be kept in groups of 10 or more individuals. While the species only lives a little more than a year in the wild, it can reach an age of over 5 years in captivity.
