Paracheirodon ( Greek para “next to”; Cheirodon ) is a genus of freshwater fish from the family of the tetras native to northern tropical South America. The genus includes the neon tetra ( Paracheirodon innesi ), the blue neon ( Paracheirodon simulans ) and the red neon ( Paracheirodon axelrodi ). It provides some of the most popular freshwater ornamental fish ever.

features

Paracheirodon species grow to be 3.5 to 5 centimeters long. They have a spindle-shaped, laterally flattened body and can be easily distinguished from other tetra species by the characteristic green to blue iridescent neon band. The back is olive-brown to red-brown, the belly more or less red in color. The adipose fin typical of tetra is present.

species

  • Red neon ( Paracheirodon axelrodi ( Schultz , 1956))
  • Neon fish ( Paracheirodon innesi ( Myers , 1936))
  • Blue neon ( Paracheirodon simulans ( Géry , 1963))

Systematics

The genus Paracheirodon was introduced in 1960 by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry . The type species is the neon fish ( Paracheirodon innesi ). The sister genus of Paracheirodon is the genus Brittanichthys , which is outwardly similar to the neons, but in which the green-blue light stripe is less pronounced and the red stripe can only be found on the tail stalk.
