geography

The banks of the Rhine near Neuhaeusel in September 1953 - the Moder in the center of the picture

The municipality of Neuhaeusel is located about 22 kilometers east of Haguenau and 35 kilometers north-northeast of Strasbourg on the left bank of the Rhine , in the middle of which the German-French border runs. The village center is one kilometer west of the Rhine, protected by a ten meter high dike. The Moder runs directly to the west of the Rhine dyke and flows into the Rhine a few hundred meters northeast of Neuhaeusel (in the Roppenheim district). The Moder is also diked. In the flat terrain around Neuhaeusel, 114 to 117 m above sea level, a section of the Rhine dike with 126 m forms the highest point in the 8.05 km² community area. Characteristic of the flat landscape are narrow hollows created by former rivers ( Giessen, Sauwoerthgraben ). Until the Rhine was straightened in the middle of the 19th century, the meandering rivers Rhine and Moder often changed their course and left behind numerous gravel and gravel areas. In the southeast of the municipality there are two gravel pits filled with water. Remains of alluvial forests have been preserved around these pits, which otherwise largely disappeared after the Rhine was straightened due to the lowering of the groundwater. In the northeast the town Neuhaeusel has a small share of an artificially created island in the Rhine, which the left bank of the Rhine Iffezheim from the right bank locks of Iffezheim power cut.

Neighboring communities of Neuhaeusel are Roppenheim in the north, Iffezheim (Germany) in the northeast, Hügelsheim (Germany) in the east and Fort-Louis in the south and west.

history

Neuhaeusel was probably founded at the end of the 17th century when the nearby Fort Louis was being built. The first written record dates back to 1725. The early residents of Neuhaeusel played a decisive role in the construction of the Vauban fortress Fort-Louis by producing and delivering bricks and tiles. The village church of St. Lukas ( Église Saint-Luc ) was built in 1724 on the foundations of an old chapel. In 1801 there was still the spelling Neuhoeeusel for the place name . Until the middle of the 20th century, the inhabitants of the village lived mainly from fishing and inland shipping.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Neuhaeusel there are three farms (grain cultivation, cattle breeding), smaller trading and service companies, including two restaurants. Some residents commute to the surrounding industrial areas on the French (including the nearby Roppenheim The Style Outlets ) and on the German side of the Rhine. Despite sandy and stony soils, maize is the main crop in the fields around Neuhaeusel - a monoculture in the entire Upper Rhine area since the 1990s. Here, however, high yields can only be achieved with high levels of fertilizer and, above all, with long irrigation campaigns.

Despite the somewhat hidden location in the Rheinaue, Neuhaeusel is well connected to the national transport network. Immediately north of the village, the expressway runs from Baden-Baden over the Rhine to the A 35 autoroute . This partially two-lane road serves as a link between the parallel motorways in the Upper Rhine Valley - the toll-free French A 35 on the left bank of the Rhine and the German A5 on the right bank of the Rhine . The next rail connection is in Rœschwoog, five kilometers to the west, on the Wörth – Strasbourg line .
