Uttenhoffen is a French commune with 204 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).

location

The village is located at the confluence of the Zinsel du Nord and the Falkensteinerbach and can be reached via the D1062, which connects Haguenau with Niederbronn-les-Bains .

history

Finds from the Neolithic period , the Hallstatt period and the Roman period show a far reaching back settlement of the district .

After the introduction of the Reformation , Uttenhofen was Protestant. After the reunion , the local church became a simultaneous church . The nave of today's church building was erected in 1762, the Gothic choir , on the other hand, dates from the 16th century. The church has a reputation for being the smallest in Alsace.

In the 18th century, the village belonged to the Niederbronn district of the County of Hanau-Lichtenberg , which at that time belonged to the Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt . However, it was awarded to von Leiningen . The place was fortified around 1790. On December 1, 1793, the nearby winter camp of Major General Stephan Bernhard Graf Keglevich de Buzin was attacked by surprise during the First Coalition War , and the officer fell.

particularities

Saint-Jean-Baptiste church

The choir of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church dates back to the 16th century. An inscription at the west entrance indicates restoration work in the 18th century. The church has three arched windows on each side; the tower is made of timber framing.

Most of the town's houses were once painted a bright cobalt blue.
