View from the bridge to the Sauer

Munchhausen lies between Lauterbourg and Seltz immediately north of the confluence of the Sauer and the Rhine . It is an old fishing village, whose municipal coat of arms therefore also shows a fish. Until the beginning of 2000, residents - the last on the Rhine in France - were still fishing.

history

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Munchhausen belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Weißenburg district in the Lower Alsace district .

Delta of the Sour

The confluence of the Sauer into the Rhine is called Delta de la Sauer in France . It is a large nature reserve and one of the six French Rhine floodplain reserves . The Bois de Munchhausen in the delta is one of the last intact softwood meadows in Central Europe. The white willow stands are covered by water for four to six months on average, which is unusual in Central Europe these days. A hardwood floodplain has formed on the edge of the Bois de Munchhausen and on higher gravel banks . The mosaic of large softwood floodplains and hardwood floodplain on the edge in the Bois de Munchhausen distinguishes the Reserve Naturelle du Delta de la Sauer .
