Mairie Neewiller-près-Lauterbourg

Neewiller-près-Lauterbourg ( German Neeweiler , in the local dialect Nawiller ) is a French commune with 656 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Haguenau-Wissembourg and the Canton of Wissembourg .

geography

The municipality is located seven kilometers southwest of Lauterbourg in the extreme northeast of France. Other neighboring communities are Scheibenhard in the north, Mothern in the southeast, Wintzenbach in the south and Niederlauterbach in the northwest.

Saint-Michel church

In 1308 a chapel is mentioned in the village, in 1584 a chapel with a tower. In 1729 an agreement was signed with the bricklayer Jost Jaeger from Lauterbourg to rebuild, including the bell tower and the choir . In 1734 the conductor Horrer testified that the work was carried out according to the budget . In 1746 the altars were consecrated by a Speyer auxiliary bishop . In 1801 the church consecrated to St. Nicholas was made an independent parish church. In 1829 the old church was replaced by a new church building based on a design by Louis Martin Zegowitz. In 1830 the new building was completed and dedicated to Archangel Michael . In 1944 the roof of the tower was hit by three shells. In 1952 the church was restored and the old tower was replaced by a new one.
