In the case of public budgets, an estimate is a means of financial planning . It lists the payments and imputed items that are expected for the following planning period.

For example, a serving estimates in the budget law to the budget preparation and its Vorherigkeit sure. The head of a certain area determines his needs and expected income and reports these to the Ministry of Finance as an estimate . Most of the time, the assumed need goes beyond the maximum available financial resources. Therefore the Ministry of Finance has to cut it. The legal basis is, for example, Section 27 of the Baden-Württemberg State Budget Code .

In the European Union, the budget proposal is called the financial perspective .
