Schaffhouse-près-Seltz (German Schaffhausen bei Seltz ) is a French commune with 558 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region . The French-speaking residents call themselves Schaffhousois .

geography

The next neighboring community is Seltz , two kilometers southeast. The A 35 (L'Alsacienne) with connection 58 (Schaffhouse) runs between the two communities . The village is surrounded by forest to the south and east. The Eberbach flows on the eastern edge .

It is around 20 kilometers to Wissembourg in the west, and Strasbourg to the south is around 50 km away. The Rhine and thus the border with Germany in the east of the municipality is only about two kilometers (as the crow flies) away.

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1576. During the Thirty Years War the village was so destroyed that it had to be completely rebuilt.

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Schaffhouse-près-Seltz belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Weißenburg district in the Lower Alsace district .
