The Oberscholven dump is a mining dump in Gelsenkirchen-Scholven . Between 1966 and 1987 it took in the tailings from the Scholven , Bergmannsglück and Emscher-Lippe collieries . The dump towers over the surrounding area by 140 m, making it the highest artificial elevation in the Ruhr area.

It belongs to the second generation of heaps, the stepped table mountain heaps. The highest point of 201.8 meters above sea level marks a night lit in the winter and in the meantime already been Replaced eight meters high since 1994 summit cross . Next to this is a half-countersunk pulley . A little lower is a transmission mast for mobile radio from Vodafone and terrestrial television DVB-T with a length of 60 m.

The radio mast was originally built in 2003 by Vodafone under the designation 5125 WXR 897 (RMSV 42 + 14 m wind zone 2). Also on the heap is the DMR - Repeater and HAMNET node DB0OHL . They are facilities of the amateur radio service .

The dump is managed by RAG Montan Immobilien on behalf of RAG AG . 212,000 trees grow on the heap, including alder , linden , red willow , ash and pseudo acacia , as well as shrubs and herbs .

Inside the heap there is a drinking water tank made of Gelsenwasser , fed from the Haltern waterworks . There are 15 tubes 66 meters long, ten meters in diameter and 36,000 cubic meters of storage capacity at 130 m above sea level. Due to the difference in height, the tank generates a water pressure of six bar for the surrounding water network .

The dump is usually not open to the public. Exceptions are an open day at Gelsenwasser, hikes organized by the adult education center and the traditional May prayer held by the parish of St. Josef in Scholven. This prayer takes place in front of the summit cross. Shuttle buses are usually used for visitors who cannot cope with the hour-long ascent.

In the immediate vicinity is the Scholven power plant with its partly over 300 m high chimneys and five cooling towers and a refinery from BP .

After laying the foundation stone on July 7, 2010, the wind farm Halde Oberscholven with two Enercon E-82 E2 wind turbines, each with an output of 2.3 megawatts, was built. The turbines built by ELE Scholven Wind GmbH for around six million euros have a hub height of 98.38 m and a rotor diameter of 82 m, and the total height of 139.38 m clearly exceeds the heap and radio mast.
