Scholven is the northernmost district of the independent city of Gelsenkirchen and is made up of the parts Oberscholven (north), Niederscholven (center) and Bülse (south).

geography

Scholven is located in the north of Gelsenkirchen and is bounded in the west by the city of Gladbeck , in the north by the city of Dorsten and in the north-east by the city of Marl , all in the Recklinghausen district . In the east and south, Scholven borders the Gelsenkirchen districts of Hassel and Buer . In addition to these last two districts, Scholven is part of the Gelsenkirchen-Nord district . The inner-city border is formed by the Nordring road in the south and the A52 motorway or the old B224 federal road to the east . Via exit 43 of the A52 motorway, Scholven has direct access to the German motorway network .

Two district centers have formed. On the one hand the area of the market place 'Im Brömm' with shops, elementary school , Catholic , Evangelical and New Apostolic Church and on the other hand the area around the Bülseschule.

history

Although already mentioned as Sculven in the early Middle Ages, Scholven was still a peasantry at the beginning of the 20th century with many meadows and fields , with forest and heather , groups of farmsteads , individual farms of the farmers and kötterhouses from Oberscholven to Niederscholven and Bülse. Scholven was one of the many farmers around the parish and the Buer freedom . But already the news reached us from across the Emscher how the advance of coal mining between 1860 and 1873 changed life and the landscape in Gelsenkirchen. The mines Dahlbusch in Rotthausen , Wilhelmine Victoria in Heßler , Holland in Ückendorf and Nordstern in the old Freiheit Horst began mining in these years. After the sinking of the first shaft of the coal mine Hugo in Buer in 1873 and the start of coal production in 1877, the industry moved closer. The Hibernia collieries in the north of Buerer began with the sinking of the first shaft on Bergmannsglück in 1903, on Westerholt in 1907 and finally on Scholven in 1908. Production began in Scholven in 1910.

Simultaneously with the construction of the Scholven colliery and the coking plant , a colliery colony emerged in just a few years . Pretty two- and four-family houses, all with their own garden and stable, were popular with the miners and attracted them to the new miners' quarter from many German regions, but mainly from East Prussia and Silesia .

Long after the construction of the colliery and the colliery colony, the coking plant and the hydrogenation plant (later Scholven-Chemie, now BP Gelsenkirchen ), Scholven remained the district with the largest agricultural area, especially in the northern area beyond the colliery gate on Glückaufstrasse. Already after the takeover of the hydrogenation plant by Hibernia AG in 1935 and the expansion of the plant to Veba -chemie (Ruhr-Öl GmbH) to the west beyond the border of the original colliery colony, but above all to the east and north to Bellendorfsweg, more and more agricultural land was lost to this industrial giant. In the meantime, every border crossing in the district of Hassel has been built up and almost forgotten that these two districts shared a north cemetery on Pawiker Strasse, which was previously easily accessible on foot, the remains of which are still there.

During the Second World War , the industrial facilities as well as the other buildings in the district were largely destroyed.

Scholven power station from the northwest

The filling of the first large heap after the Second World War on the northern Feldhauser Strasse, the construction of the large power plant (formerly Veba Kraftwerke Ruhr AG (VKR), today Kraftwerke E.ON AG ) since 1968 north of the former colliery and the filling of the second large dump east of the old Dorstener Strasse in the Auf der Kämpe area are the last stages of industrial expansion and the decline of the peasantry in the north of the district. The gypsum works built in 1988 then displaced the old allotment garden on Feldhauser Strasse, but this was compensated for by the creation of a new allotment garden to the west of Buddestrasse and south of Metterkampstrasse.
