Hessler was originally a Westphalian peasantry consisting of individual farms and was located in the far northwest corner of the county of Mark . Since the 19th century, Heßler formed a rural community in the Prussian province of Westphalia . The community first belonged to the Wattenscheid district of Bochum , then from 1868 to the Gelsenkirchen district and from 1876 to the Schalke district. The Schalke office became part of the new Gelsenkirchen district in 1885 . On April 1, 1903, Heßler was incorporated into the independent city of Gelsenkirchen together with other communities.

The main factor behind the industrialization and population growth of Hessler was the Wilhelmine Victoria colliery , which mined hard coal from 1860 to the 1970s .
