The Sauer near Wœrth in Alsace |
The Sauer , French (Rivière de) la Sauer , in the southern Palatinate headwaters of Grünbach , Sauerbach and Saarbach , is a 85 km long left tributary of the Rhine in Germany ( Rhineland-Palatinate ) and France ( Alsace ).
Surname
The name Sauer (bach) originated in the southern Palatinate- Alsace-speaking area, because the stream in the upper course carried slightly sour-tasting water that came from the bogs through which it flowed in the source area . The High German name Saarbach for the German upper reaches came about in the first half of the 19th century, when the Palatinate was re- mapped under the administration of the Kingdom of Bavaria and the Bavarian officials "translated" the local Palatine pronunciation [ ˈsɑːrˌbax ] von Sauerbach into the written language .
geography
course
The river rises as Grünbach in the western Wasgau , as the southern part of the Palatinate Forest and the northern part of the Vosges are also called. The source is at 310 m above sea level. NHN above Eselssteige, which belongs to Landesstrasse 478, a little more than 300 m north of the German-French border between the local communities Eppenbrunn and Ludwigswinkel . Immediately to the west of the spring, the Palatinate main watershed runs from the Erlenkopf ( 473 m ) in the south to the Rothenberg ( 415 m ) in the north.
The Grünbach, which flows 2 km from south-west to north-east, bends to the right at the confluence of the Faulbach in a south-easterly direction and takes on the Steiniger Bach 2 km further from the left . From here on, the united waters are named Sauerbach and Saarbach . The so-called Saarbachtal runs about 10 km south-east, in it the Saarbach accompanies the state road 478 and the brook passes the hamlet Schöntal with the Schöntalweiher , the hamlet Saarbacherhammer with the Mühlweiher and the local community Fischbach . Below this community was temporarily planned the creek for so-called Wasgausees to accumulate; the project was abandoned in 1987. 3 km further, the Saarbach turns south and flows through Schönau , where it is dammed into the Königsweiher , and Hirschthal . There it crosses the German-French border to the northern Vosges and is now called Sauerbach , but soon Sauer .
Initially, the Sauer flows further south through the Alsatian regional park Vosges du Nord with the villages of Lembach and Wœrth . In a left curve to the southeast, it reaches the Upper Rhine Plain , in which it flows through the Forêt de Haguenau for 20 km . Behind Forstfeld , it crosses under the A35 autoroute and then turns north-east. It passes Kesseldorf and Beinheim , takes up the Seltzbach from the left near Seltz and then flows into a western arm of the Old Rhine . This has been regarded as part of the Sauer since its inflow was separated from the Upper Rhine . It runs northeast of Seltz near Munchhausen from the left to this; Exactly opposite on the German side of the Rhine flows the Murg from the northern Black Forest .

Hydrology
At the confluence of the Sauer and the Rhine, the mean discharge rate (MQ) is 6.07 m³ / s; the catchment area here covers 805.5 km².
At the Beinheim gauge , the average annual flow rate of the Sauer was calculated over a period of 44 years (1967–2010). The catchment area at this point corresponds to 541 km² about 67% of the complete catchment area of the river.
The highest water levels are measured in the months of January to March. The flow rate reached its peak in February at 6.14 m³ / s. From April onwards the discharge falls slightly and sinks in September at 1.71 m³ / s to the lowest level, after which it increases again from month to month. The annual average is 3.72 m³ / s.

nature
On the upper reaches of the Sauer on both sides of the German-French border as well as in the Forêt de Haguenau and in the estuary there are large areas that are largely natural and in some cases even have a character similar to a primeval forest .
The area where the Sauer flows into the Rhine ( Delta de la Sauer ) is a large nature reserve and represents one of the six French Rhine floodplain reserves . The Bois de Munchhausen in the Delta de la Sauer is one of the last intact softwood floodplains in Central Europe. The white willow stands are covered by water for four to six months on average, which is relatively unusual for Central Europe. The hardwood floodplain develops in the edge areas of the Bois de Munchhausen and on higher gravel banks . The reserve naturelle du delta de la Sauer is characterized by the mosaic of large softwood floodplains and hardwood flood plains on the edge .
use
The water of the Saarbach and the Sauer was dammed in several places for the operation of hammer mills and mills . The reservoirs are now mostly used as natural swimming pools and bathing lakes .
