Włodzimierz Schmidt (born April 10, 1943 in Poznan ) is a Polish chess master . He was the leading Polish player in the 1970s and 1980s.

Schmidt learned chess when he was 9 years old, and two years later he started training at the chess club. He participated in four Polish youth championships between 1957 and 1960, of which he won two. In 1962 he played for the first time in a national championship for adults and achieved third place. After studying at the Technical University of Poznan , he devoted himself intensively to chess from 1966. Until 1994 he took part in the Polish national championship every year , which he won seven times.

Schmidt is not only Poland's record holder for participating in the national championships (28 times), but also for participating in the chess Olympiads : he made his debut in Varna in 1962 , where he scored 67 percent (+8 = 4 -3) of the possible points. Until 1994 he represented his country at 14 Olympiads and played 184 games, achieving a success rate of 56.8 percent (+57 = 95 −32). He also recorded with Poland at the European Team Championships in 1973, 1989 and 1992 in part.

In the Polish team championship , Schmidt played for KS Pocztowiecz Poznań until 1972 (with the exception of the 1963 event, in which he played for Pogoń Wrocław ), from 1973 to 1982 for Maraton Warsaw , with whom he played in 1973 , 1974 , 1975 , 1976 , 1977 , 1979 and 1981 Polish team champion and participated in the European Club Cups in 1976 and 1979, 1983 and from 1986 to 1991 for KS Kolejarz Katowice and since 1993 again for KS Pocztowiecz Poznań .

In 1968 FIDE awarded him the title of International Master , in 1973 he gave up an academic career and decided to play chess professionally. In the same year he achieved the first standard for the grandmaster title in Leipzig . After he fulfilled his second grandmaster norm in Polanica-Zdrój in 1976 , he was the first Polish player since 1950 to be awarded this title. Schmidt is currently one of the most sought-after chess coaches in his home country. He has been FIDE Senior Trainer since 2004 .
