Radosław Wojtaszek (born January 13, 1987 in Elbląg ) is a top Polish player in chess .

Life

Wojtaszek learned chess at the age of four and joined a chess club when he was five. Since then he has been promoted and trained by the Polish Chess Federation . He had his first major successes in youth chess : in 2004 he was both European youth champion and world youth champion in the U18 category. In the same year he finished fourth at the U20 World Junior Championships in India.

At the end of 2004 he was third in a major rapid chess tournament in Warsaw , where he defeated the Englishman Nigel Short in the preliminary round. In 2005 he was sensational at his first participation in the national championship of Polish champions and earned the title of Grand Master (GM). He met the required standards in February 2003 at the 20th Open in Cappelle-la-Grande , by winning the U18 World Cup in 2004 and the Polish individual championship in 2005 in Poznan .

At the World Chess Championships in 2008 and 2010 he was part of Viswanathan Anand's secondary team . In 2008 he won the European Rapid Chess Championship in Warsaw. In 2010 he won the Magistral Internacional de San Juan tournament with 6.5 points from 10 games after ranking before Laurent Fressinet . In June 2011 he won the György Marx Memorial in Paks with 8 points from 10 games and an Elo performance of 2882. In January 2014 he won the Basel Open with 6.5 points from 7 games . In 2016 he was the best Polish chess player. In July 2017 he won the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting 2017 with 4.5 out of 7 points . In October 2018 he won the Chess.com Isle of Man International with 7 points from 9 games after a playoff against Arkadij Naiditsch with the same number of points .

Wojtaszek is married to the Russian Alina Kaschlinskaja , who holds the title of International Master .

National team

Wojtaszek took part in the 2006 , 2008 , 2010 , 2012 , 2014 , 2016 and 2018 Chess Olympiads with the Polish national team, achieving the second-best result on the top board in 2012. He also played at the European Team Championships in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 , 2015, 2017 and 2019 for Poland, as well as at the 2017 World Team Championships, when he finished third with the team and achieved the best individual result on the top board.

In the German Federal Chess League he played for Hamburg SK from 2006 to 2014 . In the 2014/15 season he played for SK Schwäbisch Hall , since the 2015/16 season he has played for OSG Baden-Baden , with which he became German team champion in 2017 , 2018 and 2019 .
