geography

course

The Seltzbach rises at an altitude of about 325  m in the Forêt de Gœrsdorf northeast of Mitschdorf in the Northern Vosges . It initially flows about 700 m through a forest area in a southern direction. Then his run leads along the border between the communities Mitschdorf and Lampertsloch , past the fields and meadows of the Gewanns In der Heimelsstraengen on his right and the Liebwald on the left. Its direction of travel is now aligned to the south-southwest. At the Brehmmühle southeast of Mitschdorf and north of the Rue de Voyageurs ( D677 ) it bends sharply, almost at right angles, to east-southeast, its future main direction of flow, which it essentially maintains up to its mouth.

It now reaches the western edge of Preuschdorf and is strengthened there on its left by a source stream coming from the Liebwald from the north. A little later it is strengthened on the right side by a stream coming from the Kalmersberg , which is also seen on some maps as the main spring stream that gives it its name. To the east of the village it is fed on its right by the Kinderlochgraben , which comes from the southwest. His run is now accompanied by the D28 for a long time . It now flows through a landscape of fields and meadows. Shortly before he reaches Merkwiller-Péchelbronn , the Augraben flow to him on the left and the Willenbachgraben a little later on the right . After the Seltzbach has left the place, it takes up the Bruchgraben on its right side south of Wingertsfeld . The Seltzbach now passes the community of Kutzenhausen . At the point where the swamp ditch flows into it on the right-hand side , the Seltzbach turns to the northeast and shortly afterwards reaches Soultz-sous-Forêts in the Wolfsgarten district .

It now changes its direction to the west, flows through a green area and crosses under Rue du Docteur Michel Deutsch ( D264 ). Shortly afterwards, its water masses are reinforced on its left side by the Froeschwillerbach , also called Froeschwillerbaechel . The Seltzbach now crosses under the SNCF tracks and now flows through fields and meadows, crosses under the D263 northeast of Hohwiller and then arrives in Hoffen , where it crosses the D52 at the Bostaetter Mühle . At the Saegmuehle , northeast of Leiterswiller , he receives the Haussauerbach coming from the north on his left . There the Eichelgraben splits off on its south side and then the Eilgraben south of Oberroedern on its north side . The Seltzbach now crosses under the D245 and shortly thereafter reunites with the Eichelgraben . Immediately afterwards another ditch to the south splits off from the Seltzbach. To the southwest of Buhl , the northern Eilgraben also flows back into the Seltzbach. Soon afterwards the Seebach , also called Seebaechel , joins the Seltzbach from the left. At the Gerittsmühle , the Seltzbach on its left side is strengthened by the Warsbach coming from the north . It now reaches Niederrœdern and is fed from the Reissergraben on its right .

It leaves this place and meanders along the northern edge of the Hesselbusch forest , then crosses under the N363 and reaches the northern edge of Seltz , where it takes the Eberbach coming from the north on its left . It now flows between Seltz and Lower Sand and finally flows into the Sauer at an altitude of 109  m .

Hydrology

At the confluence of the Seltzbach in the Sauer , the mean flow rate (MQ) is 1.8 m³ / s; the catchment area here covers 219.8 km².

At the Niederroedern gauge , the average annual runoff of the Seltzbach was calculated over a period of 47 years (1965–2011) . The catchment area at this point, with 202 km², corresponds to about 92% of the entire catchment area of the river.

The highest water levels are measured between December and March. The flow rate reaches its peak in February at 3.32 m³ / s. From April onwards, the discharge drops noticeably month after month and reaches its lowest level in August at 0.45 m³ / s, only to then increase again from month to month. The annual average value is 1.67 m³ / s.

The monthly mean discharge (MQ) of the Seltzbach in m³ / s, measured at the Niederroedern hydrological station.
Data calculated from the values for the years 1965–2011
