from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Erwin-von-Steinbach-Stiftung is a German foundation based in Frankfurt am Main , whose aim is to promote scientific work and cultural events on the subject of Alsace-Lorraine . It is named after the sculptor Erwin von Steinbach , who worked as a cathedral builder in Strasbourg .

history

The foundation was established on August 9, 1960 under Hessian state law (according to other information, 1961). In part, she took over the tasks of the Scientific Institute of the Alsace-Lorraine in the Reich at the University of Frankfurt, which existed from 1920 to 1945 and, after the First World War, also had the aim of promoting and at the same time promoting scientific and cultural work on Alsace-Lorraine should indicate the political and cultural importance of religion. This predecessor had already set up an Alsace-Lorraine library at the University of Frankfurt am Main , which is now on permanent loan from the foundation in the university library and is being expanded to this day. The foundation also owns the estates of well-known people in the region, such as Ernst Barthel , Robert Ernst and Marie Hart .

Like its predecessor, the foundation sees itself as apolitical and excludes political activities. A development association ( Society of Friends and Patrons of the Erwin von Steinbach Foundation ) has existed since 1963 and is now recognized as a non-profit organization.

tasks and goals

The foundation's task is to support scientific and cultural work on Alsace-Lorraine. This includes, for example, the maintenance of the Alsace-Lorraine library, the preservation of legacies, support in the preparation of work on the subject and the issuing of own publications. Cultural events in Alsace are also promoted.

Erwin von Steinbach Prize

Since 1962, the foundation has awarded the Erwin von Steinbach Prize, endowed with 2556 euros, at irregular intervals. Among others, Angelika Merkelbach-Pinck and Albert Schweitzer were honored . This award must not be confused with the award of the same name from the Alfred Toepfer Foundation FVS , which was awarded until 1943 (see Erwin von Steinbach Prize ).
