Robert Turner (composer)
Robert Turner (born June 6, 1920 in Montreal , † January 26, 2012 in Winnipeg ) was a Canadian composer and music teacher.
Turner studied piano with Frank Hanson and Walter Hungerford and composition with Irvin Cooper at the McGill Conservatory of Music . He continued his studies at McGill University with Douglas Clarke and Claude Champagne and in 1947 at Colorado College with Roy Harris . Until 1948 he studied at the Royal College of Music with Herbert Howells and Gordon Jacob and until 1950 at the George Peabody College of Teachers in Nashville / Tennessee , and in 1949 with Olivier Messiaen in Tanglewood . That year he also married percussionist Sara Scott .
From 1952 to 1968 he worked as a music producer at CBC Vancouver. He taught at the University of British Columbia from 1955 to 1957 , from 1968 to 1969 at Acadia University and thereafter until his retirement in 1985 at the University of Manitoba . His students included T. Patrick Carrabré , Jim Hiscott , Diana McIntosh and Glenn Buhr .
