Claude Gauvreau
Claude Gauvreau (born August 19, 1925 in Montreal , † July 7, 1971 there ) was a Canadian writer .
Gauvreau studied at the Jesuit College Sainte-Marie and until 1947 at the University of Montreal . In 1942 he came to the group of automatists around the painter Paul-Émile Borduas , in which he was active as a poet and playwright, from 1945 also as a critic.
In 1947 his "dramatic object" Bien-être with the actress Muriel Guilbault (his "muse incomparable") was performed. In 1948 he was co-author of the manifesto of the automatists Refus global . After the Guilbault suicide in 1952, Gauvreau went into psychiatric treatment and wrote the novel Beauté baroque about her . In 1954 he organized the last exhibition of the automatists under the title La matière chante .
Between 1952 and 1969 Gauvreau wrote numerous texts for the radio, in addition he wrote plays and poetry. Janou Saint-Denis performed La jeune fille et la lune and Les grappes lucides at the École des beaux-arts in 1958 , the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde in 1972 Les oranges sont vertes and in 1974 La charge de l'orignal épormyable .
During Gauvrau's lifetime only the volume of poetry Brochuges appeared in print. An edition of his complete works was not published until 1977. In 1992 Jean Salvy wrote a scenic adaptation of Beauté baroque . In 1993 his correspondence with Jean-Claude Dussault appeared in print. His play L'asile de la pureté was performed in 2003 by the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde .
