Charles Cros

Charles Cros (born October 1, 1842 in Fabrezan , Département Aude , † August 9, 1888 in Paris ) was a French poet and inventor .

Life

Charles Cros was a distinguished poet and humorous writer. In 1871 he founded the circle of poets Cercle des poètes Zutiques . In the technical field, he developed several improved methods in photography , including a. an early method of color photography. He also developed various improvements in the field of telegraphy .

He is best known for being on the verge of inventing the first audio recording device . In April 1877 he submitted a paper to the Natural Science Academy in Paris, in which he reported that the vibrations of sound waves can be measured by a pen attached to a vibrating membrane . He also reported that with this knowledge one could engrave the vibrations in metal so that a needle attached to a membrane could then run over the engraved vibrations and reproduce the tones. He called his device so designed Paléophone . Before Cros could dig deeper into this idea or even build a model, Thomas Alva Edison developed the first working phonograph .

Charles Cros died in Paris at the age of only 45. The Académie Charles Cros in Paris is named after him.
