José Evangelista

José Evangelista (born August 5, 1943 in Valencia ) is a Canadian composer of Spanish origin.

Evangelista studied physics at the University of Valencia from 1960 to 1967 and at the same time harmony, composition and orchestration at the city's conservatory with Vicente Ascencio . In 1979 he moved to Canada. There he studied from 1970 to 1973 at the University of Montreal with André Prévost and from 1976 to 1981 at McGill University with Bruce Mather . He also took part in the Darmstadt summer courses in 1974 and 1984 .

Evangelista has taught at the University of Montreal since 1972, and since 1979 as a professor. On trips to Java (1976), Bali (1980) and Burma (1986) he studied Javanese gamelan music and Burmese music. He then founded the Balinese Gamelan Workshop at the university . He was one of the founding members of the Événements du neuf , a concert society for avant-garde music, and the Traditions musicales du monde , a society devoted to the spread of non-Western music.

In 1986 Evangelista was Composer in Residence at the Akademi Musik Indonesia in Yogyakarta and guest composer at the Darmstadt Summer Courses, from 1993 to 1995 Composer in Residence of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra .
