Meina Schellander (born July 28, 1946 in Klagenfurt , Carinthia ) is an Austrian object artist and painter of conceptual art .

life and work

Meina Schellander grew up as the daughter of a tailor in Ludmannsdorf in the Rosental . After graduating from high school in 1966, she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna , where she attended the master class for graphics with Maximilian Melcher . Her first major project was "Findling Krastal" in 1973 at Otto Eder's Krastaler Symposium , where she hung a boulder between the rocks. Influenced by Eder, public space plays a major role in her work, such as plaza designs and church interiors. For example, in 2007 she designed the installation “Konnexion 1” in and around the Maria Saal cathedral by stretching yellow threads around the building, including a homage to her mother. In 2008 she dealt with the work of Simone Weil in “Konnexion 2” in the Jesuit Church in Vienna .

In her work phases of object art alternated with phases of painting. Her subjects are often set in the religious area, for example, she dealt with Hemma von Gurk and Katharina von Siena .

Many of her installations, objects and works are made of traditional materials, especially stone and metal. The sculptural works “Head Additions” from the late 1970s and 1980s were accompanied by graphic studies, which played an important role in preparation.

In her exhibition “Fremdbild Heimat - for example Carinthia” in 1989, she staged a parallel action that corresponded to her personal life situation between Vienna and Klagenfurt and not only referred to Robert Musil , who was born in Klagenfurt , but also showed a distance to the term Heimat, similarly as with Ingeborg Bachmann .

Many of Meina Schellander's projects, although they often received awards, could not be implemented because they often caused a lack of understanding and contradictions. Schellander is a member of the Vienna Secession and of the Carinthian Art Association .

Meina Schellander lives in Vienna.
