Maximilian Melcher (born August 28, 1922 in Baden near Vienna ; † October 31, 2002 in Vienna ) was a visual artist and university professor .

Melcher was professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1972 to 1992 and also rector from 1972 to 1976 and from 1984 to 1987 . As a painter and graphic artist, he left a very extensive work. His prints are mainly based on self-portraits and landscapes. As head of the master school for graphics for many years, he trained a large number of artists, including some very important ones such as Siegfried Anzinger , Gunter Damisch , Tone Fink , Heinz Göbel , Richard Kriesche , Gotthard Muhr , Peter Pongratz , Meina Schellander , Hubert Schmalix , Robert Zeppel -Sperl .

Melcher received numerous awards, including the City of Vienna's Graphics Prize in 1961 and the Lower Austrian State's Culture Prize in 1964. He was buried at the Döblinger Friedhof in Vienna.
