Work and reception

He became known in the 1960s for his etchings and woodcuts. In a commemorative publication for the 280th anniversary of the Academy of Fine Arts, he is described as one of the “most important former students of the master school for graphics”. As a sculptor he worked with the materials plaster of paris, clay, stone and wood and Otto Breicha placed him in the great Austrian tradition that was shaped by Fritz Wotruba . In his painting of the early seventies he is considered a forerunner of the Neue Wilde . Numerous study trips lasting several months, especially to African countries, were also reflected in the work, for example in the lithographic portfolio “From an Egyptian Journey” published by the Rupertinum Salzburg . Peter Baum interprets Muhr's work "as a continuation of the great expressionist tradition ... for which we have names like Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka , Alfred Kubin and Richard Gerstl ". Kristian Sotriffer sees him as "located between Goya and Art Brut ". Otto Breicha, on the other hand, does not even want to classify him: "He does not need to get excited about the trains bursting out into the various artistic directions, because he knows cleverly and confidently what he wants and where he wants to go."
