Life

Rudolf von Gutmann was an important art and book collector. When his father, Wilhelm von Gutmann (1826–1895) died, he was only 15 years old. Therefore, his half-brother, Max von Gutmann (1857-1930), was appointed as his guardian . In addition to shares in the Gutmann Brothers company and part of his father's property, Rudolf von Gutmann also inherited the Gutmann Palace .

After reaching the age of majority , he was able to dispose of his assets and in 1904 acquired the Kalwang estate . There he had a large villa built as a hunting lodge and a smaller villa as a guest house. With his half-brother Max, Rudolf von Gutmann now owned around 50,000 hectares of land. 1909–1910 he bought Adalbert Lanna's important art collection and expanded it with great dedication. Rudolf von Gutmann was personally liable partner and managing director of the banking house Gebrüder Gutmann, founded in 1922 .

On March 13, 1938, he fled to Czechoslovakia , and from there he and his wife reached Canada via Switzerland . On September 14, 1938, the entire assets of the Gutmann Brothers company were placed under fiduciary management by the Gesellschaft zur Verwaltung und Verwaltung von Vermögenschaften mbH . The Witkowitz iron works belonging to the company were incorporated into the Hermann Göring works and Rudolf von Gutmann's art collection was confiscated. Parts of the collection were restituted around 1947, but parts of the graphic collection (41 Rembrandt etchings) have been lost since the end of the Second World War .

Ferstel (1898–1986), a granddaughter of the architect Heinrich Freiherr von Ferstel .
