history

Founded in 1922, Bank Gutmann was active in all areas of the banking business at the time with the exception of accepting savings deposits and issuing bonds and Pfandbriefe . Customers included the most important group companies of the Gutmann Group, but also some companies that did not belong to it. Bank Gutmann managed the finances for the companies of the Gutmann Group, but was not involved in them. The Gutmann Group was badly hit by the global economic crisis in the 1930s. After the National Socialists came to power in 1938, the Gutmann family's assets were “ Aryanized ”. In this context, the liquidation of Bank Gutmann was initiated, but not ended by the end of the Second World War . In 1947 the Gutmann family successfully applied to the Austrian Ministry of Finance to end the liquidation and to revive the banking license . In the following period, however, Bank Gutmann did not develop any activities other than paying pensions for former employees. In 1957, Karl Kahane acquired the bank from the Gutmanns and began to rebuild the banking business. The focus was initially on the processing of foreign exchange transactions for leading Austrian companies. After expanding further business areas, Bank Gutmann was converted into a stock corporation in 1971 . In the 1980s, Bank Gutmann placed bonds from the Republic of Austria and state-related utility and road construction companies with the country's leading insurance institutes. In the mid-1980s, the bank decided to focus its business on asset management . The establishment of external pension funds in the 2000s was also supported by Bank Gutmann as an investor and advisor.
