Jirka Wartenberg (also Jirka Rieckhoff ; born September 22, 1945 in Berlin-Pankow ) is a German singer and guitarist who was active in the GDR . He played and sang with the Atlantics , the Alexanders , the Berolina Singers , the Reichert Combo and the Gerd Michaelis Choir , among others .

Life

Wartenberg played in various bands since his youth. After he had passed the actual Abitur exam, but not the associated skilled worker training, a degree was not possible. He therefore worked in various professions, including as a cashier for electricity and gas and as a salesman for musical instruments. At the same time he attended the Friedrichshain Music School in East Berlin . Since the beginning of 1968 he was a member of the Gerd Michaelis Choir and performed with him in the Friedrichstadtpalast . During this engagement he got to know the solo dancer Elke Rieckhoff , whom he married in April 1969 and whose name he adopted. For the birth of his first daughter, he wrote the title Now you are there, which was released as a single.

In April 1972 his wife and their daughter did not return to the GDR from a trip abroad, in consultation with him. As a result, his records were withdrawn from stores and productions for television, radio or records were no longer possible. Concert appearances were however still permitted. From August 1972 he played with the Atlantics, among others together with Hansi Biebl . His attempt to leave the GDR with the help of an escape agent in early 1973 was betrayed. Wartenberg was arrested and sentenced to three years and four months imprisonment for " illegally crossing the border ". His parents, who knew about the escape plan, were also sentenced to prison terms - the mother was suspended. On October 1, 1975, he was ransomed by the Federal Republic and deported.

Jirka Wartenberg has lived in the south of France since 1976. He is married for the fourth time. Among other things, he worked in France as a truck driver and antique dealer.
