Super Mario Odyssey ( Japanese title: スーパーマリオオデッセイ) is a Jump 'n' Run - Action Adventure - video game from the Super Mario series , which by Nintendo for the Nintendo switch has been developed. It was released on October 27, 2017 and sold 2 million times within the first three days of sales. The press consistently praised the game.

Overview

The scene of the action in this part of the series is a planet based on the earth and the moon of the planet. Mario leaves the mushroom kingdom and embarks on an airship , the Odyssey , on a journey to mysterious new places and experiences adventures there. The main aim of the plot is to prevent Bowser from marrying Princess Peach , who has been kidnapped by Bowser.

Mario is accompanied in this adventure by Cappy, a hat spirit who transforms into Mario's hat. Cappy is the central feature of the game. You can use it for various attack techniques and for overcoming obstacles. With the help of Cappy, Mario can also "capture" various opponents (e.g. gumbas or Cheep-Cheeps) as well as neutral animals (e.g. frogs or a tyrannosaurus) or objects or devices (e.g. power lines or zippers) ". In addition, Mario retains some of his classic skills, which are already known from Super Mario 64 , such as the wall jump, the triple jump, backflip or pike jump. One of the new actions that Mario can do in Super Mario Odyssey is the stomp attack jump, in which Mario jumps into the air after a stomp attack and reaches the height of a triple jump in the process. He can also do a so-called hat jump, throwing Cappy and jumping on him; With this technique and the pike jump larger gorges can be overcome (the hat jump can only be done once in the air, ie you have to touch the ground at least once between two jumps on Cappy). Boxing and kicking are eliminated in favor of the capping function. The power indicator is based on the one from Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 .

development

The development of Super Mario Odyssey began in 2013, after Super Mario 3D World for Wii U was released. Was developed Super Mario Odyssey of Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development (EPD) in collaboration with the Nintendo subsidiary 1-Up Studio .

Super Mario Odyssey was first shown on October 20, 2016, when Nintendo released the Nintendo Switch preview trailer . However, it wasn't officially announced and titled until the Nintendo Switch presentation on January 13, 2017. In the so-called Nintendo Treehouse, Shigeru Miyamoto said the same day that the game would "go back to the origins," by which he meant that Super Mario Odyssey would be more aimed at the more advanced players than the heavier and more complex parts of the series. On October 27, 2017, Super Mario Odyssey was released worldwide exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.

Sales

Super Mario Odyssey sold two million times in the first three days. It is also the fastest-selling game in the Super Mario franchise in Europe and North America . It also made Super Mario Odyssey the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch game, overtaking The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild until Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! was overtaken.

By June 30, 2020, the game had sold 18.06 million times.

Trivia

The most striking and eye-catching world in the game is “Cityland” or “New Donk City”, which is loosely based on the city of New York City . The residents of New Donk City are people who are modeled on reality (completely anthropomorphic in appearance). Mario, who is only half the size and here looks less like a real person, walks through the traffic of a big city in Cityland, along skyscrapers , across public spaces and can even drive a Vespa- like moped . Thanks to Cappy, Mario also manages to capture power lines and move over the tall buildings.

In addition to New Donk City, a few other countries in the game are based on locations in the real world. For example, Bowser's country is strongly inspired by Japan and the gourmet country of Europe and the food of Europe.

The Mayor of New Donk City is Pauline, a rather forgotten, original virgin in distress from the pre-Peach Mario universe. Nintendo fans mostly know Pauline from the arcade classic Donkey Kong from 1981, in which you have to rescue her as Mario (then: Jumpman) from the clutches of the kidnapper Donkey Kong .

The main task in Cityland consists initially of helping Pauline to organize the city's traditional music festival by looking for the four musicians who are scattered around the city. If you have achieved this goal, Pauline sings the song Jump Up, Super Star! Which among other things, part of the Super Mario Odyssey - soundtracks and could be heard even in previous trailers for the game.

The town of New Donk City has many references to the Donkey Kong franchise. So the streets are called z. B. "Dixie Street" or "Cranky Avenue" (allusions to the video game characters Dixie Kong and Cranky Kong ).

Super Mario Odyssey is the first game in the series in which Mario can wear different outfits.

In the game itself there are many references to past Nintendo games and characters in the form of outfits. So there are u. A. a Doctor Mario outfit and a Diddy Kong outfit.

Super Mario Odyssey was the first sandbox-style Super Mario game since Super Mario Sunshine.

You can collect over 999 power moons. These are then no longer counted, but you can buy infinitely more power moons.

The ruins are very reminiscent of Dark Souls .
