history

founding

Hartig Rasch memorial (2005)

A beautification association and the city council met on September 13, 1846 and made the decision to turn an unused area north of the city into a park . The idea soon took shape thanks to the initiative of the two park founders, forest inspector Friedrich Karl Theodor von Hartig and the court clerk Julius Albert Rasch , as well as the generous donations from some citizens. From 1849 the western part of the park was designed first, the planning and implementation of the eastern part of the park began a little later. This part of the complex served the hussars as a riding arena , followed new landscape design principles and differed from the main park complex .

Parkfest

The first park festival took place in 1861. In the following years, the public life in the park increased so that the serving of drinks in the summer months was soon approved. Every three years a park festival took place, which established itself as a colorful folk festival .

Rose Temple

Rose Temple (2017)

In the 1870s, the Rose Temple was built on an artificial hill. Its name can be traced back to the planting around the building, and numerous roses were planted around the building . Even today, the rose temple shapes this image.

Kurhaus

At the current location of the Kurhaus, a park restaurant opened in 1878, which was expanded in the 1930s and a fountain was added on the forecourt . The fountain is popularly known as the "frog fountain" because the fountain is adorned by four water-spouting frogs sitting on the edge . The restaurant still exists today, has overnight accommodation and a small stage with a beer garden in which spa concerts have been held on Sundays in recent years .

Mud bath

At the beginning of the 20th century, lignite was drilled in the area around Bad Dübens . In doing so, they came across a moor camp , the analysis of which confirmed the extraordinarily beneficial effects of the moor soil. The moor camp was to be used, so the Eisen-Moorbad-Gesellschaft was founded in 1913 and a newly built mud bath was opened in 1915 .

Monuments

A Hartig-Rasch monument inaugurated in 1887 commemorates the park's founders. For the 50th anniversary of the park, the Germania monument donated by residents was erected on July 12, 1896, and the Bismarckstein in 1897 . In the 1930s, the war memorial was added to commemorate those who fell in the First World War .

Remodeling

The small park at the Moorbad was probably created in 1928. In 1938 the area at the Obermühlenteich was integrated into the park. The spa garden at the Moorbad was redesigned in the late 1940s and planted with rhododendrons . A violent storm destroyed part of the tree population in June 1963, which changed the face of the spa park. At the beginning of the 1990s, the new building of the rehabilitation center in the Kurpark began , in 1996 the new building of the forest hospital was completed right next to it .

In 2004 and 2005 the spa and public park was extensively renovated. In the part of the park in front of the mud bath, the rock garden , a stone well and the goldfish pond were removed. However, the popular rhododendrons remained. The design was modernized by creating raised beds , a barefoot path and a new fountain . In the northern section of the park, a number of trees were removed, making the park more translucent. The paths have also been modernized. The completion of the work was celebrated on September 17, 2005 with a festival of lights .
