Planning and construction

After hospitals in large cities were damaged by bombing in the Second World War or were broken down due to destruction, construction of so-called alternative hospitals for those damaged by bombs began in 1942. Landscapes were planned far from cities threatened by bombs. For camouflage, several interconnected buildings were planned with the greatest possible spacing from one another on spacious building sites at a low height. The hamlet of Hammermühle in Bad Düben (at that time still Düben) was suitable because the location was in the forest and was therefore surrounded by tall trees. The approximately 74,000 m² facility, which was planned with an average bed capacity of 400 beds, consisted of semicircular building barracks, which were connected to each other by a 350 meter long general corridor (reception, administration, treatment rooms, wards, X-ray, operating room, kitchen wing, craftsman area ) were connected. There were 23 such hospitals across Germany, 4 of them in the area of the later GDR ( Bad Saarow , Beelitz , Düben and Eisenberg ). Objects at the General Commissioner for Sanitary and Health Care in Berlin-Hohengatow were designed and managed by the “ Aktion Brandt ” department, named after Karl Brandt , a former personal physician of Hitler . The construction work was carried out on behalf of the Supreme Reich Authority at the headquarters of the Todt Organization. The alternative hospital for bomb victims in the cities of Aachen , Cologne and Leipzig with a bed capacity of 400 beds in Düben was opened in the summer of 1943. The name "Forest Hospital" was added later.

General Hospital (1943-1946)

From the opening in 1943 to June 1946, the hospital existed as a makeshift facility. In June 1946 the declaration was made to a “general hospital with surgical and internal department”, there was also a gynecological ward with obstetrics. Treatment of tuberculosis sufferers began as early as 1945. From June 1946 the name "Forest Hospital" officially existed.

Specialized Hospital for Lung Diseases (1946–1971)

From 1946 onwards, in addition to inpatient treatment, the first outpatient treatments were carried out in the fight against the developing widespread disease tuberculosis . The Düben Forest Hospital was set up as a TB welfare center. The Düben hospital was developed into a specialist hospital and declared a state TB sanatorium for Saxony-Anhalt. Despite intensive treatment (500 beds, 180 employees), 138 patients died of tuberculosis in 1949 alone. The disease was pushed back in subsequent years and then eradicated as a widespread disease. The name of the facility was then " Waldkrankenhaus Bad Düben - sanatorium and clinic for lung diseases ".

Specialist hospital for orthopedics (1971–1995)

The orthopedic held in 1971 with the opening of an orthopedic department in catchment Waldkrankenhaus and 1975, the facility became a " specialized hospital for orthopedics explained". Since then, the house has enjoyed a very good reputation throughout Germany, and many well-known athletes have had operations here. In 1995 the old location in the Hammermühle was closed and the newly built forest hospital at Dübener Kurpark was opened. The buildings have been empty since the move and are gradually being demolished. The demolition and disposal costs are estimated at around 90,000 euros. In 2008 the site was sold for 15,000 euros, and Ferienfreizeiten GmbH from Dinslaken has been the owner of the site since 2009 . In 2011 an investor planned to create areas for residential development along Reinharzer Strasse between the Neubert company and the existing single-row residential development. At the moment, the demolition work has stalled because the investor fears that the ruins will be demolished for a lot of money and then no building permit will be obtained.
