Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles ( jap. バイオハザードダークサイド·クロニクルズ , Baiohazādo Dākusaido Kuronikuruzu for Biohazard: The Darkside Chronicles ) is a 2009 published survival horror - Rail shooter for the Nintendo Wii that of Capcom was developed. It is the sequel to Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles .

In contrast to its direct predecessor, The Darkside Chronicles received USK approval from the age of 18 despite almost identical graphics and depictions of violence and was published uncensored in Germany .

For the 15th anniversary of the Resident Evil series, The Darkside Chronicles appeared together with The Umbrella Chronicles as an HD edition under the name " Resident Evil: Chronicles HD Collection " as a download from the PlayStation Store , which can be downloaded via PlayStation Move as well as DualShock -3 controller can be controlled. Due to the indexing of The Umbrella Chronicles , this collection is not available as such in the German PS store, however, The Darkside Chronicles HD can be purchased individually.

Game mechanics

Aiming in the game is done with the Wiimote and optionally the Nunchuk controller or the Wii Zapper to control the crosshairs visible on the screen. The controller is held directly towards the screen. As is typical for Rail Shooter, the player does not have the opportunity to control the character of the game himself. The movement of the character is essentially predetermined and follows a fixed plan, but situation-dependent evasive movements can be carried out or one of two possible paths can be chosen in good time. The game allows two players to play at the same time, each controlling his own cursor.

The environment of the game world, which is divided into individual levels and chapters, is z. Sometimes interactive and contains various destructible objects such as cupboards, containers, lamps or statues. These are often consumables such as. B. Hidden herbs or ammunition, but also unlockable extras and background information on the story can be unlocked in this way.

Between the individual levels, the inventory can be managed and new weapons can be bought and improved. The currency for this is the highscore points achieved in the game, which are earned depending on how the level is played through (time required, accuracy, deaths suffered, etc.).

action

In The Dark Side Chronicles storylines are mostly from Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil Code: Veronica picked up. A new scenario in South America called " Operation: Javier " serves as a framework for this , which takes place four years after the events from Resident Evil 2 and two years before those from Resident Evil 4 . The main characters in this scenario are Leon S. Kennedy and Jack Krauser , known from Resident Evil 4 , who are supposed to track down the drug lord Javier Hidalgo. He is involved in business with Umbrella Corporation and plans to use BOWs to build his power . To do this, he infected a fishing village and his own daughter Manuela with the T-Veronica virus. Leon and Krauser are finally able to hunt down Javier and are forced to kill Manuela, who has been mutated by the virus. In the further course it is also explained why Krauser later changes sides and joins the notorious Albert Wesker .

During the mission, Leon Krauser tells of his earlier experiences, which the player (s) reenact in flashbacks. In the chapters on Resident Evil 2 , the player takes on the roles of Leon and Claire Redfield , in the Code: Veronica sequences those of Claire and S teve Burnside, who was caught on Rockford Island at the time .

Reviews

Reviews were mostly positive. Numerous improvements compared to its predecessor were particularly praised, such as the longer length and better game depth. Graphics and tension were also highlighted positively. However, there was criticism for the hectic camera and the resulting problems with aiming.
