Resident Evil Zero ( Japanese バ イ オ ハ ザ ー ド 0 , trans. Baiohazādo 0 , Biohazard 0 ) is the fifth part of the video game series of the same name . Like its predecessors, the game belongs to the survival horror genre. Zero was first released for Nintendo GameCube in 2002 , followed by an implementation for Wii in 2008 and an HD remaster for PlayStation 3 , PlayStation 4 , Xbox 360 , Xbox One and PC followed in 2016 . In May 2019 a version for the Nintendo Switch was released.

action

Resident Evil Zero takes place before the first part . The Bravo team of the STARS Special Command was dispatched to investigate the bizarre murders in the Raccoon Forest , but the helicopter crashed on arrival. The crew survived the accident, but lost all equipment. While securing the site, the team came across a prisoner transport and the bodies of murdered soldiers. There is only no trace of the convict and ex-marine Billy Coen , who should also be in the car and was on the way to his execution for multiple murders. In the role of Rebecca Chambers , an 18-year-old STARS recruit, the player goes on a search for the fugitive. She struck gold in a nearby train. But the train suddenly starts and both of them have to defend themselves against zombies. In order to survive, the two decide to work together. In the further course they have to defend themselves against all kinds of mutated monsters. They encounter a giant scorpion, a giant millipede, a giant bat as well as flukes that have been modified with the T-virus and which appear again and again, which have the appearance of Dr. Imitate James Marcus, one of the founders of Umbrella. Marcus himself had bred the leeches many years ago before he was murdered by Albert Wesker on behalf of Ozwell E. Spencer, who was also involved in the founding of Umbrella. As a young man, Marcus has now returned with the help of his leeches and seeks revenge. Rebecca and Billy can finally defeat Marcus and his leeches, who have a collective intelligence and in the end join together to form a giant creature, the leech queen.

In the end, Rebecca lets Billy escape, as it turns out during the game, wrongly convicted for a massacre of the inhabitants of a village during a failed mission and tells her superiors that he was killed during the events.

Characters

As with Resident Evil 3 Nemesis and Resident Evil Code Veronica , it is not possible to choose between different playable people at the beginning. However, as soon as the protagonists meet, you can switch to the other character at any time. There are also sections that only need to be completed with a specific person.

Playable characters

  • Rebecca Chambers: The newest member of the STARS (Special Tactics And Rescue Service / Squad) Team Bravo. An extremely intelligent woman who graduated from university at the age of 18. Due to her outstanding knowledge of chemistry and biology, she was accepted into the team of the elite group as a paramedic despite her young age.
  • Billy Coen: The former Marine was sentenced to death on circumstantial evidence for the murder of 23 people. On the way to his execution, the prisoner van crashed, so that Billy was able to escape. At first glance, Billy seems to be a rough fellow with no feelings. Only in the course of the adventure does he show his true colors. On his escape he meets Rebecca, from which a friendship develops with an indefinite end.

Supporting characters

  • Albert Wesker: Wesker is head of the STARS and at the same time troop leader of the alpha team. He is a specialist in biotechnology and a former army technical officer. He has already solved many difficult cases. During what goes on in Resident Evil Zero, his role is more likely to raise questions than answer them. Which side is the cool cop with the sunglasses really on?
  • Wiliam Birkin: He is an outstanding scientist at the Umbrella Corporation and was one of the two researchers who were allowed to report directly to James Markus. After his disappearance, Umbrella ordered him to continue his superiors research. For Birkin it was a dream come true. He will later develop the G virus.
  • Enrico Marini: The deputy head of STARS is also the head of the Bravo team. He has already successfully led numerous missions and therefore enjoys the full trust of his comrades. Enrico is a specialist in survival techniques and his experience is invaluable to the STARS service
  • Richard Aiken: Richard is a communications specialist, so he's the Bravoteam radio operator. Although he has undergone special training and tough combat training, his fighting skills leave a lot to be desired. Yet his services have always proven to be of great value. Aiken is very popular with his comrades.
  • Kenneth J. Sullivan: Sullivan is the oldest member of the entire team still active in the field. He has a PhD in chemistry. His specialty is defense against chemical and biological weapons. Thanks to his many years of experience, he is valued and respected by Enrico Marini.
  • Forest Spyer: Close friends with Chris and Joseph Frost from the Alpha team. When the three go on tour, no bar is safe from them. Spyer is used as a sniper. His aim and accuracy are unique. Only Chris can stand up to him.
  • Edward Dewey: At 1.93 m he is the longest in the team and the helicopter pilot. However, he is also excellent at handling weapons and can be used for any conceivable task. After the emergency landing in the forest, he tries to stay close to Rebecca. Because it is his secret task to support the paramedics on their first mission.
  • Kevin Dooley: A Raccoon City Police Force pilot. Kevin was not a member of the STARS, but at the direction of his supervisor, he took part in the Bravo team. Thanks to Edward's secret assignment, he filled the position of the responsible pilot. While the STARS members were examining the forest, he waited alone in the helicopter for the alpha team.
  • James Markus: Appointed as the first director by the founder of the umbrella group Oswell E. Spencer. Markus was a brilliant scientist who gave himself completely to his research. He was commissioned by Spencer to research the T-Virus. It was during this research that the Progenitor Virus emerged, which James loved like his own child. He was also one of the few Umbrella employees who voted for human experimentation.
  • Mysterious Man: A mysterious handsome young man who is somehow related to the case. Nothing is known about him except that there is a connection between him and the leeches who raided the train.

Game principle and technology

Like its predecessor, the game uses the classic Resident Evil game principle from precalculated backgrounds, a dynamic 3rd person perspective and the typical "tank control", whereby a new, slightly modified variant of this can also be selected. The central feature of the game is the so-called “partner zapping system”, whereby the player can switch between Rebecca and Billy at almost any time, which is partly necessary for the further progress of the game. For the first time in the series, the storage boxes in which the items could be stored were dispensed with in this part. Instead, the items can be placed anywhere and picked up again later. The respective storage location is marked on the map to ensure an overview. The game is saved on the familiar typewriters, each of which uses a ribbon. As in the previous parts, there are no automatic save points.

Facts

Originally, after the release of the second part, Capcom planned to release this prequel exclusively on the Nintendo 64 as a 512 Mbit module. However, since the low distribution of the Nintendo 64 would not have brought in the high module costs, the project was discontinued. By changing Nintendo from modules to mini-DVDs, Capcom got the project out of the drawer and implemented it with a heavily revised graphic on the GameCube. The level of detail of the individual rendering scenarios has tightened again compared to the GameCube remake of the first part, which makes for a slightly more sophisticated look.

New editions

In 2008 Capcom released the Wii version in Japan; in Europe this was published under the title Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil Zero on January 22, 2010.

In 2016 Capcom released the game as an HD remaster for the PlayStation 3 , PlayStation 4 , Xbox 360 , Xbox One and for the PC on January 19th as a download version. This version has an increased resolution of 1080p, an adapted, optionally selectable dynamic 16: 9 widescreen format and two new game modes called "Leech Hunter", in which leeches have to be collected, and the "Wesker mode", in which the main game is played again , but this time with the villain Albert Wesker, who also has a devastating special attack. The two modes are available after the first playthrough, and new costumes for the two main characters are available for download from the Playstation Store and Xbox Store .

The disc version was released on January 22nd together with the first Resident Evil HD Remaster under the name Resident Evil: Origins Collection , but only for PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One. For the Playstation 3, the game (like the first part) was only released individually as a retail version in Japan, but here with all the additional content of the European Digital Deluxe Edition . This version does not have a regional code and has German screen texts as well as the original English voice output and can therefore also be played on German consoles.
