Full motion video
A full motion video ( FMV for short , also called full motion video ) describes a film sequence in a computer game that is not calculated in real time and thus usually stands out qualitatively from the game graphics.
The videos often serve as an appetizer and introduction to the game and are often shown as a reward after successfully completing the game or parts of the game. FMVs are particularly suitable as stylistic devices for games with a large narrative component.
Nowadays, normal game graphics often reach the quality of older FMVs. Current FMVs can still show an even higher level of detail and special special effects.
Well-known examples of computer games that use FMVs are the “ Command & Conquer ” parts one to four, of which parts one to three additionally contain render videos , Tomb Raider and the Final Fantasy cycle, which also includes several computer-generated films emerged ( Final Fantasy: The Powers Within You , Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children ). Also worth mentioning is the Wing Commander series , which contained cutscenes with well-known actors such as Mark Hamill and Malcolm McDowell ( Wing Commander 3 ) and John Hurt , Christopher Walken and Clive Owen ( Privateer 2 ). The Chaos Control game for the Philips CD-i is also based mainly on full motion videos. A subgenre of the adventure game is the FMV adventure, which contains film scenes and is often part of the interactive film .
