Carmen Dell'Orefice (born June 3, 1931 in New York City ) is an American model and actress . She first appeared on the cover of Vogue fashion magazine at the age of 15 . In 2012 she was the world's oldest model to present the spring and summer collections.

biography

Carmen's parents were of Italian and Hungarian origins. She spent part of her childhood in welfare institutions or lived with relatives. From 1942 she lived again with her mother, who moved with her to New York City. At the age of 13, she was discovered on the bus by the wife of photographer Herman Landschoff, approached and engaged for a modeling job. Two years later, in 1946, she signed a deal with Vogue . The American was the preferred model of the photographer Erwin Blumenfeld , who shot her as Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Cinderella alongside the then supermodel Dorian Leigh and the actors Ray Bolger and Jose Ferrer . The cover with Dell'Orefice was published in December 1947.

In the early 1950s, Dell'Orefice married Bill Miles, with whom she has a daughter. After the birth, the divorce quickly followed and she married for the second time in 1958. Her husband was the photographer Richard Heimann. After she decided to quit modeling, he left her.

Her third marriage to the architect Richard Kaplan from the mid-1960s lasted nine years. In 1978, Carmen Dell'Orefice decided to go back to modeling and she has continued her career to the present day. In the late 1980s, she was engaged to US talk show host David Susskind, who died before the wedding. It ran for Target , Cho Cheng and Rolex in the 1990s and 2000s . She also appeared in Vogue , W and Harper's Bazaar .

In June 2011 she celebrated her eightieth birthday. The University of the Arts London awarded her an honorary doctorate in July of the same year for her service to the fashion industry . The university presented a retrospective of Carmen's Vogue covers and other recordings from its private archives. Carmen Dell'Orefice is still working as a photo and catwalk model.
