Underworld: Awakening is a fantasy / horror - action film from the year 2012, the directors Måns Mårlind and Bjorn Stein. It is the fourth installment in the Underworld film series and the third installment starring Kate Beckinsale and is set about 12 years after the events of Underworld: Evolution . The film opened in German cinemas on February 2, 2012.

action

After the events of Underworld: Evolution , humans discovered that two mutations of Homo sapiens evolved and lived undetected on Earth for centuries. A warlike cleansing operation of humans against vampires and lycans ( werewolves ) begins , which ends with their almost complete extinction. While on the run, Selene is captured and cryopreserved with Michael .

When Selene, referred to as "Subject 1", awoke from the freezing cold twelve years later, she saw some events through the eyes of her liberator, "Subject 2". She escapes from the facility called “Antigen”, begins a merciless search for the background and ends up underground in the city. There she meets a chasing vampire, David, and a horde of Lycans on the hunt. Again she sees through the eyes of the hunted liberator. Assuming it is Michael, she intervenes and chases the werewolves away for a short time. Instead of the hybrid Michael, however, she finds a scared girl named Eve. On the further flight from the Lycans, Eve knows how to defend herself impressively despite a deep wound. Selene realizes that the girl is hers and Michael's daughter and must therefore also be a hybrid being.

David leads Selene and the girl to an order led by his father who lives in a grotto under a dam. On the way there, Eve is getting worse and worse. The two suspect that she could not heal herself, which is a mistake, as they later learn from the healer in the grotto: Eve was only very weak, and as a result the healing proceeded extremely slowly. After the healer nourishes her with blood, to everyone's amazement, Eve heals much faster than ordinary vampires.

Because of her past, Selene is undesirable with the vampires in the grotto. A little later, Lycans, who, contrary to the suspicions of the vampires, are more powerful than ever, penetrate the underground cave system and kill numerous vampires, including David. Selene is incapacitated in a fight with a mighty, overpowering Lycan. When she wakes up, David's father has already handed Eve over to the Lycans. Before Selene sets out to free her daughter, she brings David to life with her blood and a heart massage.

To find the whereabouts of her daughter, Selene gets in touch with the human police officer Sebastian. He was married to a vampire who fell victim to the purges. From his information it becomes clear that Eve is again being held captive in the laboratories by "Antigen". The institute's scientists were tasked with creating a vaccine against vampires and lycans. In fact, however, the genetic laboratory is controlled by Lycans who pursue their own goals with the hybrid creature Eve. The Lycan Dr. Jacob Lane has already succeeded in producing a vaccine from Eve's blood that makes his son Quint an almost invincible Lycan.

With Sebastian's help, Selene penetrates the building of "Antigen" and discovers Michael, who is still frozen. With a well-aimed shot, she initiates the defrosting process, but then rushes to the rescue of her daughter. In the underground car park there is finally a fight between Selene and Quint Lane and between Eve and Jacob Lane, who has also been vaccinated in the meantime. The badly battered Selene ultimately succeeds in destroying the far superior Quint with a silver grenade placed in his body. Eve kills Jacob by ripping his throat out.

Back in the lab, Michael has disappeared. With the help of Eve, who can now see through his eyes after Michael's awakening, they follow him to the roof of the house. But he cannot be found here either. The film ends with Selene's vow to find Michael and reclaim the world of vampires from humans and Lycans.

reception

The film received medium to poor reviews in America. The website Metacritic gives a Metascore of 39/100 based on 17 newspaper reviews . The Rotten Tomatoes website scored 29% of 59 reviews as positive. In summary it says: " Underworld Awakening offers more bland action and less story than its predecessor, which creates a feeling of insignificance."

“More speed, more exploding heads and filleted opponents, less myth, sense and understanding: Mårlind & Stein stage the fantasy actioner“ Underworld: Awakening ”like a video game for the big screen - visually quite appealing, but empty in terms of content and without substance. The end of the series is still not in sight, "Underworld 5" is already hinted at in the last scene. "

"Underworld Awakening" goes perfectly with Kate Beckinsale's sexy outfit: Don't think about it, just look and have fun! "

“With the introduction of people as equal, no less violent actors and their merciless extermination campaign, the series reaches a new high point of brutality and mercilessness. After Selene's escape from the high-security laboratory at the latest, there is loud shooting after the other, which is monotonous and tiring in the long run. One almost has the impression that “Underworld Awakening” wants to surpass its predecessors in terms of furiousness and gruffness. The turbulent excitement is pretty cold; because after the departure of Bill Nighy as Viktor and Martin Sheen as Lucian, who caused dramatic friction in the previous films, there are no dazzling antagonists to identify with. Scott Speedman, who had given the hybrid Michael something like gentleness and doubt and with this counterweight ensured a few moments of pause, appears only a few seconds. Instead, the Swedish directing duo Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein introduce a mutated werewolf that is almost as big as Godzilla and that leaves a trail of devastation behind. This penchant for the monumental and spectacular seems more ridiculous than attractive. "

- Michael Ranze : film service

Despite the reviews, the film, which cost around $ 70 million to produce, started at number one on the US box office and grossed over $ 150 million by March 2012.

Remarks

  1. In the original text of the review, the name Martin Sheen is given, although the role was played by Michael Sheen .
  2. Godzilla is 50-100 meters tall, the mutated werewolf is a maximum of five.
