Underworld - Rise of the Lycans is a film made in 2009 and after Underworld: Evolution , the second sequel to Underworld . It's a prequel , so the action of the film takes place before Underworld . Screen Gems released the film in Germany on February 26, 2009.

action

The film tells the story of the origins of the Lycans. Lucian is the first Lycan to be born to a werewolf . His transformation into a werewolf is not influenced by the moon, but he is able to perform it consciously. Viktor, one of the three elders of the vampires , lets Lucian grow up in his convent . However, he is kept like an animal and has to wear a thorn collar, which would kill him if he were transformed on his own. Viktor creates more werewolves, the Lycan people, who serve as slaves for his own race. Meanwhile, "wild" werewolves, the transformed victims of William, the first werewolf, attack human settlements out of the woods.

Viktor's daughter Sonja, a rebellious young vampire, has a secret relationship with Lucian. This mixing of bloodlines is strictly forbidden and would be punishable by death should it become known.

One night Sonja again disregards her father's instructions and joins an escort for several human nobles who bring their tribute payments to the convent. There is an attack by a superior force of "wild" werewolves. Lucian, feeling the danger, breaks out, frees himself from his collar and rushes to help Sonja in the fight against the werewolves. Although he saves her life, it is not Viktor's gratitude that awaits him, but a flogging, the loss of all of his privileges and increased imprisonment.

Tanis, who has observed the liaison between Lucian and Sonja, makes a pact with them. For his help with the escape, Sonja offers him her place on the council of elders. Only Lucian and a few Lycans manage to escape, who are now preparing for an attack on the vampire fortress in the forest.

Viktor begins to see through the real connections and confronts Sonja. This tells him that she is pregnant. Viktor, deeply shocked by this breach of trust, holds Sonja prisoner in her room and uses her as bait for Lucian. He penetrates the convent alone and tries to free Sonja, but their escape fails and both are captured again. Sonja is sentenced to death by the council of elders, and Viktor also agrees to this decision with a heavy heart.

Sonja and Lucian are chained in a dome-shaped room. After Lucian has been flogged again and the vampires have left the room, the dome is opened. The penetrating sunlight burns Sonja within seconds. When Viktor later appears, Lucian transforms and tries to escape as a werewolf. His roar is the starting signal for the army of "wild" werewolves and Lycans in the forest, which are now beginning to storm the fortress. Lucian pursues the fleeing Viktor through the catacombs of the fortress, fights with him and injures him badly, whereupon Viktor falls into the well and sinks into the water.

But Viktor survives and, with the help of Tanis, can bring the other two elders to safety. All other vampires in the fortress are slaughtered by the werewolf pack.

The end of the film shows the introductory scene from the first part of " Underworld ", in which Selene sits in the rain on the balcony ledge of a building and stares into the depths, underlaid with the words Kravens, who tells Selene that Viktor and not the Lycans are hers Killed family. Viktor only spared Selene for one reason, because she reminded him of his daughter - the daughter he once sentenced to death, to which Selene replied, "All lies."

production

In September 2003, shortly after the first part was released, the production companies Screen Gem and Lakeshore planned to release a third part as a prequel to Underworld. Kate Beckinsale , who plays Selene, showed interest in taking on the role in the two sequels.

In December 2005, director Len Wiseman ( Underworld: Evolution ) stated that the Underworld franchise was designed as a trilogy . Wiseman said, "We kind of wanted to create a whole story ... a huge collection of ideas and threads that we figured out about different possibilities."

In an interview in June 2006, Wiseman said, “The third film will be a prequel. It will be the beginning of the whole story and you will learn things about Lucian that you did not know before; he will play a big part. It's about the origin (the races of the Lycans and Vampires) and how the war started. It will be a selective film. The film will also show the Lycans' point of view for the first time. ”The director also said,“ A lot has been done in the days of writing. We developed Underworld 3 for a while. I'm not going to direct either; I'm just going to be a producer and write. ”When asked if Kate Beckinsale would play Selene again in the prequel, Wiseman said,“ The film takes place before her and will overlap with her making. We're just about to see how far we'll go with it. ”In October 2006, Michael Sheen , who played Lucian in the two previous films, showed an interest in playing this role in the third part.

The Hollywood Reporter announced on October 26, 2007 that Danny McBride would write the script and Patrick Tatopoulos , who created the special effects for all three parts, would make his directorial debut.

Len Wiseman produced the film and contributed parts to the script, but handed over the direction to Tatopoulos as announced. Kate Beckinsale as Selene can only be seen in the last scene of the film, which was taken from Underworld and thus creates the transition to its plot. She can also be heard as the narrator at the beginning.

The film was in Auckland ( New Zealand ) and in Roxboro ( North Carolina turned). Filming began on 10 January 2008 and ended on March 19, 2008. The production costs of the film to 35 million US dollars estimated.

On January 22, 2009, the film celebrated its world premieres in various countries, including Australia . The film opened a day later in the United States , Canada and the United Kingdom . The film was shown in Germany from February 26, 2009, and one day later in Austria. The film was released on DVD in the US on May 12, 2009, in the UK on May 18, 2009 and in Germany on August 20, 2009, where Sony Pictures Home Entertainment released it with an FSK-16 rating.

On the opening weekend, the film grossed over $ 20.8 million in the United States, and totaled over $ 45.8 million in the United States.

Viktor, Lucian and Selene are the only three main characters who can be seen in all three films in the Underworld film series. Each of these three characters can only be seen in a flashback in one of the films. For Viktor and Lucian this is Underworld: Evolution , for Selene it is Underworld - Revolt of the Lycans . The librarian Tanis plays an important role in Underworld: Evolution and Underworld - Revolt of the Lycans .

criticism

Cinema judged: “Since the prequel to“ Underworld ”and“ Underworld: Evolution ”portrays the beginnings of the ancient feud, Kate Beckinsale (Viktor's later adoptive daughter Selene) had to be replaced by the new leading actress Rhona Mitra . For the fan base, the main attraction is that the story is told for the first time from the perspective of the Lycans. It is a shame that these look very artificial - but forgivable: Thanks to Bill Nighy, your blood freezes in your veins. "

Christina Krisch wrote in the Kronen-Zeitung on February 26, 2009 that the film was an underground, effective horror with epic ambition. The film would be particularly effective due to the equipment and the night-black catacomb look atmosphere. The dialogues could have used more "bite", however.

The lexicon of international films said: “Solid, but predictably staged genre cinema that gives away the chance for melodrama as well as the draft of a new mythology. Possible political references from class struggle to racial madness are completely ignored. Too few hidden fears and hidden desires characterize the entertainment surface. "

Sequels

In 2012, the fourth film, Underworld: Awakening, hit theaters. However, this is not another prequel, but a sequel to Underworld: Evolution . Kate Beckinsale took on the role of Selene again and the Swedes Måns Mårlind and Bjorn Stein directed. The German premiere of the film was on February 2, 2012. Another sequel followed in 2016 with Underworld: Blood Wars .
