Thrice is an American post-hardcore band formed in Irvine , California , in 1998 .

Band history

Foundation and first album

Thrice was founded in 1998 by 17-year-old Dustin Kensrue (guitar, vocals) and Teppei Teranishi (guitar) during their high school days. Teppei hired his skater friend Eddie Breckenridge for the bass guitar, who in turn brought his brother Riley (drums) with him.

In just two days they created their first EP First Impressions with Brian Tochilin in an edition of 1000 copies. Despite many applications, they were initially denied the opportunity for larger performances and their skate punk- oriented music mainly appeared on smaller, local occasions. Her first song recordings are now freely available on the Internet.

In April 2000 Thrice released their first album Identity Crisis on the Greenflag Records label , with which they achieved a respectable success. During a gig, label owner Louis Posen ( Hopeless , Sub City ) became aware of the band and signed them. In 2001, Identity Crises was re-released and Posen signed Thrice as opening act for Samiam . Tours with Midtown and Hot Rod Circuit followed.

Major contract

In late 2001, Thrice went into the studio with producer Brian McTernan and recorded the album The Illusion of Safety , which was released on February 5, 2002 and made major record labels aware of them. Thrice chose Island Records . The separation from Posen's label Sub City was "with a heavy heart, but full of confidence" (Teranishi).

The next album, The Artist in the Ambulance , was released in 2003, which fully met the label's expectations and was also successful on a commercial level.

In 2004 the band released an acoustic album called Apple Unplugged Sessions , which was distributed exclusively via iTunes .

In April 2005 the band released their first DVD If We Could Only See Us Now (the title is a quote from the song So Strange I Remember You from the album Illusion of Safety ).

During the first half of 2005, the band spent a lot of time in the studio with producer Steve Osborne . The result was published on October 18, 2005 under the name Vheissu . It was stylistically quite different from its predecessor, contained more changes in tempo, electronic elements and was more characterized by a melancholy, gloomy mood. The sales figures were far behind those of the predecessor, for which it was nominated for the New Pantheon Music Award . In 2006 the Red Sky EP was released with two new studio songs and four live recordings as the last release on Island Records . Then there was a break with the label. The band emphasizes that they separated in friendship. The two parties had agreed that the band waived outstanding repayments for the production costs, but would get the rights to the album back.

The Alchemy Index

In the meantime the band had their own studio in which they could work on new material. Thrice did not try to connect musically to the successful album The Artist in the Ambulance , but moved even further from their roots with the four-part concept work The Alchemy Index and sometimes also advanced into progressive rock areas. Guitarist Teppei Teranishi also took over the sound engineering tasks and so the band did without an external producer for the first time.

The project was released in the form of four EPs with six songs each, which are musically and thematically dedicated to the four classic basic elements of nature: fire, water, earth, air. Two EPs each were combined into one publication: The Alchemy Index: Vols was released on October 16, 2007 . I & II - Fire & Water . The Alchemy Index: Vols. III & IV - Earth & Air was released on April 18, 2008.

While the music on Fire is still very reminiscent of the earlier music of Thrice, the band broke new ground with Earth : All equipment was moved into a living room and recorded with only two stereo microphones. The central instruments were acoustic guitars, banjo, piano, standing bass and trombone. The aim was to achieve the most natural sound possible - just like it sounds when a band is sitting and playing in one room. Air is the most versatile of the four EPs, but as a common thread it has a certain melancholy mood. As on the previous album Vheissu , the band used electronic aids, but also incorporated recordings from the great outdoors (such as the rustling of leaves in the wind). According to the band, Water is characterized by an "overwhelming sadness" .

The last songs of the individual EPs (Fire - The Flame Deluge; Water - Kings upon the Main; Air - Silver Wings; Earth - Child of Dust) are musically characterized by the fact that the same intonation was used and lyrically from the I. -Perspective of the respective element is told.

Early leak of the Beggars album

In June 2009 the record company Vagrant Records announced on Twitter that the new album would be titled 'Beggars' and should be released in October 2009. On June 25, the music magazine Visions reported that the recordings had been completed. In a blog entry on the band's website on July 16, drummer Riley Breckenridge specified the release date and initially named October 13 as the date. After the album appeared on the Internet three months before the announced date, the band preferred the release. The album was released on August 11th as a download from iTunes, followed by a CD version with bonus material in September.

Dustin Kensrue explained the title of Beggars (in German beggar ) in an entry on the band's official studio blog in June as follows:

"I think we are at most times deluded in thinking that we are totally responsible for our circumstances, but in the end almost everything is beyond our control to a high degree and we can't even be sure we will wake up tomorrow. Whether you believe that God created you for a purpose, or that the world is governed by blind chance, everything in life is a gift at its core; we are beggars all. "
“I think we are mostly mistaken when we think that we have full responsibility for our situation. Ultimately, almost everything is to a large extent out of our control and we cannot even be sure that we will wake up the next day. Regardless of whether you believe that God created you for a specific reason or that the world is ruled by sheer chance, ultimately everything in life is a gift; we are all beggars. "

Setbacks for the band

The tour following the album was interrupted by various blows of fate for the band members. During the North American tour in autumn 2009, guitarist Teppei Teranishi had to leave the band for personal reasons and was represented by various guest musicians. In January 2010 he stated in a blog entry that his mother had died and that he could therefore not attend a planned tour in Great Britain. If Teppei's loss could still be compensated, the tour dates of another North American tour had to be canceled in April of the same year, as singer Dustin Kensrue also had to leave due to an emergency in his family. In September 2010, Thrice went into the studio to write Beggars' successor . During the work, the father of the brothers Riley (drums) and Ed Breckenridge (bass) died, which is why the studio time had to be interrupted. In addition, a depot was broken into and robbed during this forced break, in which the band temporarily stored various instruments. According to the band, however, the majority of the instruments were in the studio due to the studio time, so that the work process on the new album was not hindered.

Major / Minor

The pieces created in the studio sessions that have taken place since September 2010 were recorded in May 2011 at Red Bull Studios in Los Angeles. It was the first time since the Vheissu recordings that the band recorded outside of their self-built studio. The band's seventh studio album was released under the title Major / Minor on September 20, 2011 on Vagrant Records . It contains eleven songs and was produced by Dave Schiffman.

Time out and comeback in 2015

On November 21, 2011, Dustin Kensrue stated on the band's blog that the band would take a break for the foreseeable future. Kensrue justified this with the growing obligation to his family, especially his three daughters. At the beginning of the statement, however, he emphasized that this is not the end of the band, but that he is currently no longer able to meet his obligations.

At the end of December 2014, the band published a photo with the inscription "Thrice 2015" on their blog and the official Twitter account.

Thrice went on tour again since mid-2015 and announced a new album for 2016 via the official Facebook account in November 2015. According to the band, the idea of performing as a band again came while visiting a Brand New concert. The album, entitled To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere , was released in May 2016, accompanied by the first Thrice concerts in Europe since 2010.

Musical development after the comeback

In various interviews about the appearance of To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere , the band members expressed themselves positively about the future of the band and affirmed that they would also like to publish new music in the future. During a US tour with Rise Against and the Deftones in the summer of 2017, the band already began to write the first songs for a new album and stated in an interview that they were aiming for a release in the summer of 2018. In February 2018, the band began recording their 10th studio album. As with the Alchemy Index EPs and Major / Minor , Teppei Teranishi took on the role of producer. During the recording, the band reported from the studio via their social media channels and asked the fans to sing in parts of a new song and send them to the band who were planning to mix the submissions together for the final song. In early June the band announced a label change to Epitaph Records and released the first new song The Gray there . On their European tour in June 2018 they played The Gray live for the first time in front of an audience. The new album, entitled Palms , was released on September 14, 2018.

Charitable commitment

Thrice are known for donating a certain portion of the proceeds of each album to charitable organizations. A youth center in Los Angeles was supported with The Illusion of Safety and the Syrentha Savio Endowment, a society for cancer patients, with The Artist in the Ambulance . Even after the rather modest income from the album Vheissu and the daring Alchemy Index project, the band sticks to this principle. Part of the profits from the Alchemy Index records goes to the Blood: Water Mission , which has set itself the goal of building 1,000 drinking water wells in Africa in collaboration with local groups.

When asked if, with the increasing difficulty of being able to make a living from music, it would not be more obvious to set up reserves for children and family instead of donating the money, Eddie Breckenridge replied: “When I said we were not exactly rich , I didn't mean it from a global perspective, but from an American point of view. If we compare ourselves to underdeveloped countries, we are rich simply because we have running water and can afford a car. That is more than a great percentage of humanity will ever have. "
