Samiam is an American melodic hardcore band that is one of the pioneers of emocore .

Music genre

Samiam started out as a punk band whose sound contained influences from hardcore . In the course of their careers they became more melodious, the anger increasingly giving way to melancholy.

Band history

The formation was founded in 1988 in the San Francisco Bay Area . The band name was based on the main character of the children's book " Green Eggs and Ham " by the American author Theodor Seuss Geisel (also known as Dr. Seuss ), who bears the name " Sam-I-Am ".

In the mid-1990s, as a result of the punk revival caused by the success of the album Dookie of the San Francisco neighbors Green Day , the band switched from the independent label New Red Archives to the major label Atlantic Records , where the album Clumsy was released. However, this collaboration did not last long; When Atlantic did not want to release a finished album in 1996, but at the same time did not allow the band to offer it to another label, it came to a break. The later albums were released again with independent record companies. In Europe, all albums since Clumsy have been released through Burning Heart Records .

The band currently consists of the two founding members Jason Beebout (vocals) and Sergie Loobkoff (guitar) as well as Johnny Cruz (drums) and Sean Kennerly, who switched to the position of bassist after starting out as guitarist. After Jeremy Bergo took over this instrument in early 2006, Kinnerly was able to switch back to the guitar. Overall, the band's career was marked by many line-up changes, in particular the position of drummer changed frequently.

Bad Religion , No Doubt , Blink-182 and Green Day all played as opening act for Samiam at one point in their earlier years. They were seen several times in Germany, including on a tour with Texas Is the Reason , which was documented by Tobby Holzinger with a split live album on Your Choice Records .

After not releasing a new album for several years, the band began work on a new album in late 2005, which was released in September 2006 under the name "Whatever's Got You Down". In the following years it remained quiet around the band. In summer 2010 they reported back with the announcement of a European tour and the release of the album "Orphan Works" - a collection of unreleased songs from the period between 1994 and 1996.

In September 2011 the band released the album "Trips" and went on a European tour in October 2011, later they played among others at Groezrock in Belgium in 2013.
