Dookie is the third studio album by the US punk rock band Green Day and their first on a major label ( Reprise Records ). It was released on January 28, 1994 in Germany and February 1 in the USA.

History of origin

After the 1992 album Kerplunk Green Day made known in the United States, several major labels showed interest in the band. Green Day eventually signed a deal with Warner sub-label Reprise Records . With this support in their backs, the group recorded the album Dookie with producer Rob Cavallo. Cavallo was also the A&R who was responsible for the contract, and had previously mainly looked after Black Sabbath and who had already achieved a coup in the alternative rock sector with the Goo Goo Dolls . The album was Cavallo's second music production. Dookie was recorded in a little under three weeks, and the vocal recordings took just two days.

The name alludes to the indigestion , which got the band members from the unhealthy diet on tour - "dookie" is an American slang -expression for feces .

All songs were written by Billie Joe Armstrong - except for Emenius Sleepus by Mike Dirnt . After FOD of written by Tré Cool follows Hidden Track All By Myself . Welcome to Paradise appeared on the previous album Kerplunk! the band, but was re-recorded for Dookie .

Music genre

Green Day play a style of music on Dookie that borrows from punk and power pop of the late 1970s / early 1980s in Great Britain. The group's role models include The Jam and the Buzzcocks . This style was sustained in the 1980s by pop punk bands like ALL , but it increasingly found itself in an underground niche. In addition to these melodic models, there is a self-irony reminiscent of nirvana.

reception

After the early 1990s grunge bands such as Nirvana , Soundgarden and Alice in Chains dominated the music market in alternative rock and thus reopened the market for heavier music, the album Dookie, together with Smash from The Offspring, triggered a wave of epigones, which by benefited from the two surprise successes.

Allmusic called the album as nearly as revolutionary as Nevermind ( nearly as revolutionary as Nevermind ) Nirvana. The album had a lasting impact on the music scene in the mid-1990s. Remember the attitude of the band "snooty Punk Rocker" ( snotty punk rockers ) while the album (even a "brilliant masterpiece of modern punk" stellar piece of modern punk was).

The American Rolling Stone voted the album in 2003 at number 193 of the 500 best albums of all time . In contrast, the album was not included in the list drawn up by the German editorial team.

The little drum solo in Burnout was later played by the German band Oomph! Quoted in the piece Down in This Hole on the album Wunschkind .
