Bang Bang is a song by the American punk rock band Green Day . It is the first single from their twelfth album Revolution Radio and was released on August 11, 2016, along with a lyrics video. The CD version contains a live version of Letterbomb , which was recorded on September 2, 2010 in Chula Vista . It is the band's first release since Xmas Time of the Year (2015) and came four years after their album trilogy ¡Uno! , ¡Dos! , ¡Tré! (2012).

Background and composition

Bang Bang is written from the perspective of an assassin. According to frontman Billie Joe Armstrong , the song is about "the culture of the mass shootings that go along with narcissistic social media in America." He also claims, “There is this kind of frenzy going on, but it’s also being filmed these days and we’re under surveillance. It's twisted for me. "

The song is considered by critics as a reminder of the band's early punk rock days with 39 / Smooth (1990), Kerplunk! (1992), Dookie (1994) and as a touch of her 2009 album 21st Century Breakdown .
