background
A "basket case" is the flippant name for a person with (severe) mental health problems.
The song was written by Green Day guitarist and singer Billie Joe Armstrong . It's about dealing with fear and emotional instability. He was diagnosed with panic disorder. Armstrong once said: "The only way I knew how to deal with it was to write a song about it."
music
The song only starts with guitar and vocals before bass and drums kick in. It's a pretty fast punk rock piece with melodic vocals. It begins with the words: "Do you have the time to listen to me whine about nothing and everything all at once?" (For example: "Do you have time to listen to my howls about God and the world?")
success
The song reached number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 , number 55 in the UK and number 18 in Germany .
Music video

It contains various allusions or re-enactments of the film " One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest " with Jack Nicholson in the lead role. The video was nominated for nine MTV Video Music Awards in 1995 : Video of the Year, Best Group Video, Best Hard Rock Video, Best Alternative Video , Breakthrough Video , Best Direction, Best Editing, Best Cinematography and the Viewer's Choice Award .
