Frank A. Langella junior [ˌlænˈʤɛlʌ] (born January 1, 1938 in Bayonne , New Jersey ) is an American actor .

Life

Frank Langella was born in New Jersey in 1938. During his studies at Syracuse University he developed a passion for some of the classics of literature - Molière , Racine , Shakespeare - and also received his first award as an actor. At the age of 23 he made his New York stage debut in André Gide's play L'Immoraliste . A new production of Bram Stoker's Dracula became one of his greatest Broadway hits in the 1970s ; the piece caused a sensation mainly because of Langella's radical reinterpretation of the blood-sucking count.

Langella was first seen in the cinema in 1970: his debut in Diary of an Adultery immediately earned him the Acting Award of the renowned National Board of Review and the Golden Globe Award for Best Young Actor . He also played in René Cléments The House under the Trees at the side of Faye Dunaway , in John Badham's Dracula , Ridley Scott's 1492 - The Conquest of Paradise , Uli Edel's Body of Evidence , in Ivan Reitmans Junior and Dave , Renny Harlin's The Pirate Bride as well in Roman Polański's The Nine Doors . According to his own statements, Langella took on his role as a skeletor in the toy figure adaptation Masters of the Universe at the request of his son, who fell asleep during the premiere.

For his role in Edward Albee's play Seascape , he received the Tony Award , the Drama Desk Award and the Los Angeles Drama Critics Award . The title role in Dracula earned him a Tony and a Dramalogue Award nomination. Langella has also received numerous awards for his performances in other plays. His performance in Diary of adultery and Mel Brooks ' The Twelve Chairs were with Golden Globe considered nominations; made his appearance in the CBS movie I, Leonardo with an Emmy nomination. In 2007 he was again awarded Tony for Best Actor for his role as Richard Nixon in the play Frost / Nixon . In 2008 Langella repeated the part in the movie adaptation of the same name, Frost / Nixon by Ron Howard , which earned him another Golden Globe Award nomination and his first Oscar nomination in 2009 . Langella won the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for best leading actor in 2016 for the portrayal of an Alzheimer's patient in Florian Zeller's play The Father .

In 1978 he married Ruth Weil and they divorced in 1996. The couple had two children.
