K. Flay (born June 30, 1985 in Wilmette , Illinois , real name Kristine Meredith Flaherty ) is an American alternative singer. She has been signed to Night Street Records , a sub-label of Interscope Records , since 2016 .

Life

K. Flay grew up in a suburb of Chicago . Her parents divorced when she was 7 years old. Her father, who was a guitar player and who, according to his own admission, shaped her musical style, passed away during her senior year at school . Various pieces from her debut album are therefore dedicated to her father. In 2003 she began studying psychology and sociology at Stanford University , which she completed. During her university years , she began to parody blingity blang blang and write rap lyrics. This was followed by her first mixtape, Suburban Rap Queen , which was released in 2004.

From 2008 to 2014 she released several mixtapes. Then she left her previous music label RCA Records to produce a studio album. The label is said to have spoken out against a studio album because "nobody is interested in their problems". On June 10, 2014, she released her debut album Life As a Dog , in which she combined elements of rap, electronic music, the indie genre and pop music. The album reached number 14 on the rap charts and number 133 on the official album charts .

The EP Crush Me was released in Germany on August 19, 2016 . The single Blood in the Cut is the trailer song for the US series Scream Queens .
