action

The film begins with one of the main characters, Rudy, who chronologically tells the story of his previously killed friends.

The five students Greg, Simon, Cynthia, Karma and Alicia want to celebrate the end of the spring semester with a visit to a weekend rave event on the supposedly uninhabited "Isle of Death" of the San Juan Archipelago off the coast of Canada. However, the group missed the last official ferry, and so they asked the local skipper and arms smuggler Victor Kirk to take them to the mysterious island for a substantial sum. After initial hesitation , he finally agreed, despite the warning of his superstitious boatswain Salish, who suspected evil spirits on the island. The captain's fishing boat is followed unnoticed by the US coast guard around Jordan Casper, who, completely on their own, also enters the island.

When the five stragglers set foot on the island, instead of dancing crowds, they find a deserted, abandoned and partially destroyed camp of the party guests. In the meantime night has fallen. Greg and his girlfriend, Cynthia, decide to have their own little party while the other three friends explore the area and find a mysterious cabin on the edge of the forest. There they are picked up by their fellow students Rudy, as well as by Liberty and Hugh, two other participants of the dance pleasure, who inform them about the attacks by bloodthirsty, reanimated corpses, so-called zombies . Together they decide to return to Greg and Cynthia to leave the island with Kirk's fishing boat, which is located in a small bay.

But their plan fails miserably, as Cynthia meanwhile mutated into a zombie and at their meeting, the young party guest Hugh attacks and kills. A few moments later, the suddenly appearing policewoman Casper shoots the beast with her service weapon in front of the astonished and stunned group. The seven people, some of whom are in shock, flee towards the bay under the command of the defensive Casper, but are again attacked by some undead and involved in fighting. With the help of Captain Kirk, they grab rows of walking undead and bring the monsters' attack to a standstill. Casper then tries to get help with the coast guard boat at the other end of the island, separates from the group, but reunites with the community after another violent attack by the creatures that Greg falls victim to. Meanwhile, Kirk equips the remaining fighters with smuggled weapons hidden on the island. Armed in this way, the powerful troops make their way into an old abandoned house, fight with various weapons against a large number of monsters in the cemetery in front of them and, after some slaughter, reach the eerie property, decimated.

In the last resort and with considerable reserves of strength and ammunition, a quintet of survivors - Rudy, the disfigured Simon, Karma and Alicia, along with the seriously injured seaman Kirk, who later sacrifices himself self-sacrificingly - enters the house into which they are pushed back. They entrench themselves and prepare for the next onslaught of the monsters, but this does not happen. In the venerable walls, the fighters will find an explanatory book by a scientist named Castillo, who was banished from Spain and who once murdered the crew of a ship, stranded on the island, enslaved all the inhabitants or turned them into soulless zombies. In search of weapons and food, the uninjured soon discover a laboratory with the bodies of the undead, which they accidentally awaken and flee into the basement of the house.

Simon blows up the access to the cellar with suicidal intent by igniting stored black powder and thus providing the three remaining companions with safe conduct. The aboveground part of the house is almost completely destroyed in the following very violent explosion , while the three students find shelter in the spacious catacombs of the house. But the supposed security is deceptive. Karma dies after further skirmishes with undead monsters until the duo around Rudy and Alicia meet the aging Castillo. In a final fight outside the basement, Rudy Castillo cuts off the head with the ax, who previously managed to kill Rudy's ex-girlfriend Alicia. At the end of the film, Rudy reanimates his beloved Alicia when a helicopter arrives with a special unit that takes the two to their hometown.

Reviews

The film received very bad reviews. House of the Dead ranks 8th in the bottom 100 of the IMDb with just 2 out of 10 points (with over 35,000 reviews). (As of January 2020).

“Adaptation of a video shooting game for simple action minds. Neither the direction nor the script and actors can be measured by conventional cinematic standards. "

“Director Uwe Boll (' Alone in the Dark ') used the zombie video game of the same name as a template for a blood-and-ball orgy. But story and performance got thin like the original pixel graphics of the first person shooter (continuation is planned). A little tip: indie rock tube Bif Naked has a guest appearance as a DJ. Conclusion: A zombie from a film: absolutely mindless. "

"Teenagers versus zombies in an undemanding, entertaining film version of Sega's shooting game of the same name."

- Focus: film

"The original artwork may already have been quite pointless, the film for the game cannot provide any dramaturgical or entertainment-related incentive to watch the almost ninety minutes of battle - with an end that is worth discussing dramaturgically - to the end."
