The Final Storm (OT: Final Storm ) is a Canadian / German coproduction by director Uwe Boll . The film, shot in 2008 and released in 2010, is a thriller with borrowings from the disaster film .

action

The earth is nearing its end. A storm rages all over the world, accompanied by heavy rains. The people are on the run or are struggling to survive in the cities. Tom Grady lives on a remote farm with his wife Gillian and 13 year old son Graham. The next major city, Cairo, is miles away. The three do not want to give up their country. One night, when the storm was particularly bad, a mysterious stranger named Silas Hendershot appears and collapses in front of her door. The next morning he pretends to have amnesia , but describes the house as his. Shortly afterwards he corrects himself. The Gradys offer him shelter and he starts helping on the farm. However, Tom distrusts the newcomer. The storm has subsided, but all animals seem to have disappeared. So does Max, the family dog. Silas destroys the boy's illusions that the dog could still survive and stages a funeral. The scenario is reminiscent of the Revelation of John , even the moon has turned blood red.

The family goes to Cairo with Silas, but everything seems deserted there too. The police station is not manned, the shops seem to have been left hastily. When Tom, Gillian, and Graham get supplies, they are attacked by looters. Silas comes to Graham's aid and the family escapes. Back at the farm, Tom still mistrusts the god-fearing Silas. In the attic of the house he finds an old newspaper clipping describing a terrible tragedy on the "Henderson Farm". Tom makes his way to the police station at night to get new information. On the way back he is attacked by looters. Although he can save himself wounded, he runs out of gas on the way.

The next morning, Gillian and Silas take a bath one after the other. When it is Silas' turn, he tries to approach Gillian, but Tom comes back. He chases Silas away and tells his family about his past: Silas hanged his father after he had gambled away the farm, which now belongs to the Grady, in his addiction to drinking. He killed the bailiff with a throat cut. Then he was imprisoned for 22 years.

However, Silas does not give up. He lights a fire at night and Tom tries to scare him away. During the fight, Silas dominates the wounded Tom and tries to hang him up like he did with his father. Then he wants to devote himself to Gillian. During this time, Graham managed to save his father. This overpowers Silas and can kill him. When they then look at the sky, they see that one star after the other goes out.

background

The Final Storm was written from a script by Tim McGregor. The film was shot on a budget of $ 5 million in Vancouver and the Sea-to-Sky Corridor , British Columbia, Canada from November to December 2008 . As with many of Boll's films, Brightlight Pictures took care of production . Among the staff was cameraman Mathias Neumann , who was the camera operator on almost all of Boll's films. Boll also worked with Cole Heppell before. Heppell was already seen in BloodRayne II: Deliverance .

On May 3, 2009, the film had its premiere on the film market (French Marché du Film ) of the Cannes International Film Festival , but was not open to the public.

Reviews

After a number of good reviews for films like Tunnel Rats and Rampage , The Final Storm was panned by critics again. Only Luke Perry's portrayal of Silas Hendershot was named as positive .

"Wild cuts, the usual swaying handheld camera and logic holes rob" The Final Storm "of any integrity that could have come from the at least partially stylish impressions of a world in mist and fog. (...) Subtlety is probably not to be expected from the German child prodigy, but that The way Boll handles religious and mythological symbolism is pretty damn gross. A red moon, reminiscent of a Photoshop gimmick, and bad premonitions wrapped in clichéd onliners are just the height of the uninspired. "
