action

Master detective Pikachu takes place in a fictional world known from the Pokémon franchise, in which not only humans but also fictional creatures called Pokémon live. Tim Goodman, a 21-year-old insurance salesman, always wanted to be a Pokémon trainer when he was a child, but gave up after his mother's death and moved in with his grandmother. After hearing of his father's death in a car accident, he travels to Ryme City to pick up his father's property, Harry Goodman. In his father's apartment he meets a speaking Pikachu, which only he can understand. The two of them flee from a group of stylus, ape-like Pokémon, which attack them under the influence of a poisonous gas labeled "R" that Tim accidentally released. With the help of Lucy Stevens, a young reporter, they find a pantimos, a pantomime Pokémon, at the docks of Ryme City , which leads the duo to an illegal Pokémon fight in which they are supposed to find more information about the gas. There they are attacked by a Charizard under the influence of the gas. You learn from the owner of the charmer that he received the gas from a person called a "doctor".

Tim and Pikachu are taken to Howard Clifford, the wheelchair-sitting founder of Ryme City, who tells them that Harry Goodman did not die in the car accident, but was kidnapped by a mysterious Pokémon named Mewtwo, which recently escaped from a research laboratory . Mewtwo is also said to have caused the car accident and deleted the thoughts of Pikachu, who was Harry's partner in the accident. After Howard warns them about his son Roger, who is said to have secretly taken control of Ryme City, Tim and Pikachu go to the research laboratory with reporter Lucy. There they find out that the "doctor" is actually the researcher Dr. Ann Laurent is who, supported by Harry and detective Pikachu, is said to have carried out experiments on the mysterious Pokémon Mewtwo. After being attacked by three quajutsu, the three of them have to flee from the laboratory and, although they can escape in a huge chelterrar garden with the help of Lucy's Enton, Pikachu is injured in this escape. After Tim asks some Bulbasaur to heal Pikachu, they lead them to Mewtwo, who heals Pikachu. Mewtwo tells Tim and Pikachu that Pikachu has freed it from the laboratory, but is captured by Roger Clifford before it could show Tim and Pikachu what really happened on the night of the accident. Pikachu, who is convinced that it has betrayed Harry to the evil Mewtwo, separates from Tim and Lucy and discovers at the scene of the accident that Harry was not attacked by Mewtwo but by Quajutsu. Meanwhile, Tim and Lucy go to Ryme City to warn Howard.

When Tim meets Howard, he learns that he intends to transfer his consciousness through the R-Gas into Mewtwo's body in order to use his powers to fuse all Pokémon with their users. After Tim learns that the real Roger Clifford has been locked away by Howard and replaced with a shape-shifting Ditto, Howard begins to merge the people of Ryme City with the Pokémon. When Pikachu returns and uses his electrical powers to attack the Howard-controlled Mewtwo, Tim manages to free Mewtwo from Howard's influence. While Mewtwo frees the humans and Pokémon from the merger, Howard is arrested by the police. Mewtwo reveals to Tim that instead of kidnapping Harry, he fused Harry with Pikachu to heal him from the injuries sustained in the accident, removing Harry's memories while keeping Harry's consciousness in Pikachu. After Mewtwo reverses this merger, Tim is offered by his fully returned father to go back home. Tim decides to stay with Harry and Pikachu and become a detective himself.
