The game was developed by Creatures, Inc. for the Nintendo 3DS , published by The Pokémon Company , and distributed by Nintendo . In the game, the player controls Tim Goodman, who teams up with detective Pikachu to uncover various crimes.

For the first time the game appeared as master detective Pikachu: Creation of a new duo ( Japanese 名 探 偵 ピ カ チ ュ ウ 〜 新 コ ン ビ 誕生 〜 , Meitantei Pikachu ~ Shin Konbi Tanjō ~ ) on February 3, 2016 exclusively in Japan . Game mechanics

Master detective Pikachu is set in Ryme City, a fictional city in the Pokémon universe. In the game you control Tim Goodman, whose father has disappeared. Together with master detective Pikachu, a speaking Pikachu that only Goodman can understand, he goes in search of his father.

In Master Detective Pikachu , the player plays the role of a detective and has to solve various puzzles. In each chapter, a major task is pursued that drives the overall story forward. He has to interview people and Pokémon to gather clues. From these clues, the player must draw conclusions in order to solve questions or tasks. Occasionally, the player has to advance the cutscenes through quick-time events , i.e. by pressing the displayed keys in good time.

Development and publication

The development of the original game master detective Pikachu: creation of a new duo began in the summer of 2013. In early October 2013, the game was the CEO of The Pokémon Company Tsunekazu Ishihara during a series of Japanese television show The Professionals announced. Later in 2013, Nintendo registered a trade mark for the name "Detective Pikachu". In early versions of the game, Detective Pikachu fought a blue Pikachu with the player.

On February 3, 2016, Nintendo released the original version of the game under the name Detective Pikachu: The Creation of a New Duo , which only contains three chapters. This version was only available digitally in the Japanese Nintendo eShop of Nintendo 3DS . This version contains nine chapters instead of the original three in the Japanese version.

In a press conference on May 29, 2019, The Pokémon Company announced a successor to Detective Pikachu for the Nintendo Switch , which takes up the open end of the game and continues.

Reviews

Master Detective Pikachu received mostly mixed to good feedback. It achieved an aggregate rating of 70 out of 100 points on Metacritic .

Master detective Pikachu was especially praised for the lively game world, the captivating story and the excellent graphics for the Nintendo 3DS . The game was criticized primarily for its low level of difficulty, the lack of German voice output and the too simple quick time events.

“Master detective Pikachu was less able to score with the simple puzzles than with the game world and story. The story of the disappearance of Tim's father starts slowly, but picks up speed from the third chapter. It's also refreshing, for a change, to meet pocket monsters peacefully in their natural environment and not be directly involved in a fight, as is usually the case in the main games in the series. "

- Nastassja Scherling from GamePro (score: 73%)

“In all this time […] I have never come across such a charming Pikachu. As a master detective, the little cult rodent not only manages to keep my interest in an otherwise casual adventure alive, this Pikachu also skilfully plays with the quirks of his own series. Embedded in an excellently designed software at the top technical 3DS level, the result is a high-quality representative of his craft, who offers little in terms of play, but makes up for it with his personality. "

- Benjamin Kegel from PC Games (score: 77%)
